The other Paul Rhoads (defensive) special: 2. Pitt 13, West Virginia 9, Dec. 1 2007. While the team finished 5–7, they ended on a high note by holding then-#2 ranked rival West Virginia to a season-low nine points in a 13-9 victory in the Backyard Brawl, limiting the Mountaineers high-powered offense to 183 yards (292 yards below their average). ∞ -

Guess they don't consider ISU over Nebraska or ISU over Texas as big upsets. Good!

we should be a lot higher on that list. Pitt beating West Virginia is not as big of an upset

They were 29 pt favorites over Pitt as opposed to 27, both teams were #2 in the country, and we finished the season with 6 wins and went to a bowl compared to 5 wins for Pitt in a conference that was much worse. Plus it was on the road for Pitt while we were at home.

OSU still had a game to go against their in-state rival.

Yeah, that Pitt game was definitely a bigger one. The whole rivalry aspect helps there, too. Replace OSU with Iowa last season and no couch in Ames would have survived

I'm not sure there were any couches left in Ames after ISU pulled out the 44-41 OT winner earlier in the year.

Personally, I don't want to be in the same category of upsets with The likes of Mich and Appalachian state...it is a knock to the program.

I fail to understand how people can not separate expectations for our fully developed program vs our program in the beginning stages. The reason it was so amazing that we won 7 games in 2009 was because it was CPR's first year. 7 games is obviously not the end goal. To beat the #2 team in the country in our 3rd year with a freshman QB is a huge deal and there is no shame in considering it an upset.
And whether you want to believe it or not, we were a 27 point dog. That is huge. I think we as fans know we can compete with others, but overcoming outside expectations is what these upsets are about. Not about diminishing how good our team was. We know how good our team was. It was good for 6 wins in the big 12. It isn't really up for discussion.

And then someday we'll be ranked #2 and get knocked off by an FCS nobody and that will be a big upset that will be talked about for years.
