New Site Feature: In-Game Chats

Here's a big shout out to our good friends at the Iowa Clinic Urology Dept. for stepping up to sponsor in-game chats for the 2012-13 football and basketball seasons. This is a feature that many of you have requested for some time. I'm happy to announce that tomorrow afternoon, it will become a reality.

There are a few things I want to clarify though. 1) CoveritLive is now charging for the use of their software this year and it isn't cheap. So again, props the Iowa Clinic for stepping up to the plate.

Our football feature writer Ian Smith and I will be conducting the chat. I will warn you that during games, there is a lot going on. We can't and will not be able to put every comment through. This will be more of a live blog for people to follow than an actual chat room. If you want to blow up about a bad play call or decision by a ref, use our game thread. My idea for users would be to have two windows open during games - the chat and the game thread.

We will however put intelligent, well thought out comments from users through. We just really want to keep this from becoming too cluttered. It's something I've never done before so I'm sure these will get better every week.

Yes!!! I wanted this so bad during basketball season last year. It's impossible to keep up scrolling through wasted space at 15 responses a page. THANKS!

Not that it pertains to me since i'll be at the game, but a moderated live blog does not sound especially exciting.

if it's similar to ESPN's during games it actually works quite well... they let in insightful stuff and reply while keeping the 'HOLY **** WHAT WAS HE THINKING" out

Exactly. Plus, with the software, I have the ability to let twitter feeds through automatically. I've got the Big 12's and ESPN Big 12 one set up so that score updates from around the league will post automatically in our chat. If you're at the game, this is a great way to follow along with everything going on around the league/stats from the game that you're attending.

so will this be accessable from the mobile site then?

Hey guys if you have any requests of good twitter feeds to put in the chat let me know. I'm trying to stay away from play by play stuff that will clutter things. I've got the Big 12 feeds, etc.
