Probably has nothing to do with 75,000 people in a few sq miles all using their cell phones.
You would think...however, I went to the UNI Wisconsin game yesterday and had zero problems with 4g service. My brother has 3g and had no problems either. I've always had reception issues at JTS. Maybe they had a booster at Camp Randall, who knows.
I can confirm this. I am contracted by Verizon Wireless as a tower climber and have recently installed new 6 foot dishes in the cities listed above. The coverage will be much better than in recent history. Especially during football season with the larger crowds in Ames. I can also confirm that there will be a COW set up at Jack Trice. To those of you not familiar with what that is I will explain. Its simply a mobile cell phone tower. It will help with coverage at the home games. We recently used them for Ragbrai and they worked great. Cheers to being able to send a damn text message.
I know there were temp US Celular towers. I had no problems, but only have a "dumb" phone--text and calls only. The only problem I had was when my dumb @** sister wouldn't pick up her phone or answer texts and had to wait for her to get into the stadium since I had her ticket.
I took my eight year old to the game and let him go off to play on the hillside. He was gone a while and I couldnt see him playing so I went to find him. He was nowhere to be seen. After checking all four hillsides I told the Ames police just in case. After another fifteen minutes or so I saw the county guys appearing to be looking for him. Both sets of authorities said that cellular traffic was almost impossible, which raised my fears all the more. Since my brother was in our seats I was hoping for him to call me with news of his return. Long story, shortened, he was sitting in the middle of the hillside crowd on SW corner... He casually came back to our seats at half. A big thanks to our law enforcement community, they were so professional and courteous. Hopefully calls get through for important things and not blocked because of mindless facebook and twitter crap.
My Verizon Galaxy Nexus showed much better signal then it used to in JTS but I couldn't do much with it. I was far down in the lower bowl of the student section though. Other people I know that were higher up and in the upper deck has less problems than me, I guess that's the price you pay for getting good seats.
