Granted the DE got up field quickly, but being ready for that is part of being a guard. Probably shouldn't have run a trap play on your own 3 but it was definitely a missed block that resulted in the safety.

No matter what, I could NEVER cheer for Dirt and Urine. -

Collin Franklin got lots of looks when he was here. Outside of him, we haven't had a B12 quality pass catching TE during CPR's tenure.

2. I wonder how long it will be before hear the announcer make those dreaded words. "Pick Six." We must have run that sideline throw 10 times.

Not a good idea to let a DE go at the LOS when your delayed hand-off/read is in your endzone. Due to how the Tulsa DL was lined-up, if the Tulsa Dlineman came up field, it was not going to work.

Re: My worthless 2 cents on the game....
Like someone said in the game thread yesterday, the safety on the goal line was a prime example of how the offense can't run read option out of the shotgun every single play - you have to run some plays under center.
I thought Jantz was much better yesterday than at anytime last year. Yeah, he had the one pick and there were some other poor decisions made, but overall he was a much better QB yesterday.
The defense, for the most part, was good.
Kick coverage was atrocious. Needs to be fixed in a hurry or the kicker needs to start kicking them out of the end zone.
I now understand why CPR is convinced this is his best team at ISU. We play Tulsa this time last year and Tulsa smokes us. This year, outside of a 6 minute stretch at the end of the 1st quarter, we pretty much owned them.

-It was good to see Tiller out there. In some past seasons he would be a starter.
-Morrisey (?) looks like he could be a player, has the frame to add another 15-20 pounds. It is too bad we could not redshirt him this year.
-Impressed with Young. Hopefully he is 100% next week.
-Good crowd for Tulsa on Labor Day weekend. ISU FB has a lot of growth potential.

Jantz exceeded my expectations, Shontrelle and White were both very good, and the defense was good enough (much better in the 2nd half).
But when I think back on this game today, I think about just how close we were to really putting a complete beatdown on Tulsa. I think if you take away just 3 plays in this game, ISU could have won something like 45-10.
Those 3 plays being....
1. The safety. Mess called a great game yesterday with this one exception IMO. That was just plain a HORRIBLE play call from your own 3 yd line. And I think today Mess would agree with that. Calling a somewhat delayed counter handoff to Jeff Woody 3 yds deep in your own endzone is just dumb. And it gave Tulsa some new life. 2. Jantz's lone INT. Yes, the pass was a tad high, but the receiver needs to either come down with that, or at least come closer to coming down with it, instead of letting it go high into the air off their fingertips. I guess Jantz just really needs to work on getting those throws over the middle down a bit, because he threw a few more after that one a bit high too.
3. Not allowing Tulsa to run it up the gut for nearly 80 yds on one play. Defense was playing great in the 2nd half, and then we made a mistake and allowed this huge run which also gave Tulsa new life once again.
Conversely though, if Knott doesn't force that fumble, we could have been in trouble too.
But overall, I couldn't have asked for anything better. Good win against a good team, and it doesn't look like we had any serious injuries either. And without the 3 plays above, I think we could have blown them out.... BUT... in a way it's kind of nice that we didn't because it gives the coaches something to work on. Like Chris Williams also said, even when we were down yesterday, I just got the feeling that we were still going to win because it looked like we were the better team. Actually, the tackle that was pulling absolutely missed the block he was supposed to have and that is why Woody was tackled for a safety. I do think when inside the 2 its best to either get some breathing room with a run up the gut for 3 yards, or play action that run and hit the TE for a 10-12 yard gain. One of the two ALWAYS works on xbox. :)

Having a play calll that lets a DLineman go at the LOS is what led to the safety. If the Tulsa player comes up field, he is in the backfield before the RG has a chance.
