Tulsa Herald – Knott’s Hit Turned the Game

The Tulsa Herald knows their football. They acknowledge that Jake Knott’s spectacular hit on Hurricane standout receiver Bryan Burnham was the turning point in the game:

Tulsa starts strong but falls against Iowa State | Tulsa World

Many games have a turning point most can agree upon, but Jake's bonecrusher may have been one of the most indisputable turning points I can remember.

Other than the safety that led to 10 points and the long run by Watts, ISU dominated that game. But I agree, the Knott hit was a momentum changer.

That hit was necessary. They had a huge momentum thing going, and we were staring right at the possibility of getting blown out. That hit changed the game from a disaster to a win.

Speak for yourself, I was very nervous at the end of the first and before that fumble.

Surprisingly I wasn't nervous either. No where in the game did I think "Oh **** we are in trouble." I felt like we were the better team and would win regardless.

Re: Tulsa Herald – Knott’s Hit Turned the Game

I would agree that it was a turning point, but I also felt the same as those that weren't nervous about the game. It was still very early on and we had certainly shown signs of moving the ball and being able to stop them. If we'd still been down by more than a touchdown near the end of the third quarter, then I would have been nervous.

Do you know why I put up with this 'pitiful job', Mr. Donaghy, why I fetch these folks' lunches and clean up their barfs? Cause they make television. And more then jazz, or musical theater, or morbid obesity, television is the true American artform.

I'm always nervous. I'm nervous when we're up by 15. I'm nervous when we're down by 3. It kinda goes with being a Cyclone. But it sure is satisfying knowing that Rhoads is on our sideline.

Re: Tulsa Herald – Knott’s Hit Turned the Game

I agree with their assessment. But, the first turning point of the game was the Tulsa kick return. I think that the staff thought that they could pin Tulsa down instead of giving them the ball at the 25. That backfired on them and directly led to giving up 10 points. The second turning point was the fumble forced by Knott. I'll admit that I was nervous with Tulsa driving up ten points. 17 might have been too much to overcome and it would have required a huge comeback to win.

Yeah, agree. Games are all about momentum. If Tulsa ran down the field and scores and goes up 23-7 the game could have been a lot different. If ISU commits one more turnover down 16-7 it could have turned south quickly. On the other hand, If ISU doesn't give them that safety we could have wiped them out as well. Games can turn on a few plays sometimes.

But I think this is where CPR has changed this team from the foundation. In years past, I would have thought the same thing. Lose momentum, cash it in, take an easy loss was where we have been. Momentum is a figment of your imagination, or a figment of getting defeated in your mind or over-reacting to adversity. This staff does a pretty good job of keeping the level right.

Am I sitting here saying I was never nervous? No, but it was a 'oh, jeez, let's see what they do here', not an 'oh, jeez, we're effed'.

Momentum is a very really thing- I'm totally convinced of that after watching sports for 35 years. The difference is, Rhoads is instilling a toughness that keeps their heads in the game, and the sheer will to overcome it and seize it back,

Count me as another who wasn't nervous. I felt like we had been playing actually pretty well, just had a few bad breaks/plays. Throughout the course of a game those things even out. Just glad we didn't dig ourselves too big of a hole to climb out of.

That's what I was nervous about, that we would dig ourselves too big of a hole. Tulsa scores a TD on that drive and we are down 3 scores.
