I suspect many here are under the same circumstance or have a close relative or friend who has this connection, too.

Re: A.J. Klein comments on Iowa State students wearing Iowa shirts on campus
My son has a friend who had about half of his wardrobe full of Hawk crap. Decided very late in the spring of his senior year that he wanted to be an engineer. He's now a freshman at Iowa State. When asking for advice on whether he could wear his Hawk stuff on campus, my son told him it was probably all right as long as he didn't wear it during Cy-Hawk week. Besides, he'll have enough free ISU t-shirts in about two weeks it won't be necessary any more. Hopefully the kid doesn't wind up in AJ's doghouse, some children can't help the awful home environment they were raised in.

The game is at least this week.

Re: A.J. Klein comments on Iowa State students wearing Iowa shirts on campus
I grew up in Dubuque and rarely heard anything about ISU...I was a Hawk fan, had a Hawk Starter jacket, etc. Until I took a college visit to ISU, I always thought Ames was on the Missouri River. I came to ISU for engineering, and had Iowa not denied me into their engineering program, I would of gone to Iowa. It didnt take too long for me to be fully converted to a Cyclone fan first, and coming to ISU during the 2002 season really helped that! 10 years later, I am a Cyclone fan first, but still cheer for the Hawks when they are not playing ISU. That being said, I don't own an ounce of Hawkeye clothing anymore

Funny anecdote: Years ago an engineering coworker was talking about his schooling at Iowa and said, "Engineering building." Another coworker, who was an ISU grad responded, "Building? One's all you have at Iowa?" The other engineers (about six ISU and four Big 10 schools) broke out laughing while the Iowa eng kept quiet. You had to be there, the look of shame on his face was priceless.

She probably thought it was Iowa/ISU game weekend...stupid HOK fans.

Re: A.J. Klein comments on Iowa State students wearing Iowa shirts on campus
I got to this thread late, so my viewpoint may have already been expressed.
When I was an undergrad at ISU, I hated it when others would were shirts/hats of other schools, and especially Iowa.
However, I think grad students should get a free pass. I just started my 5th year at NC State. The t-shirts in my wardrobe are probably half ISU, and half NC State. I still rock ISU shirts on NC State's campus (I'm wearing one right now). It doesn't mean I'm any less loyal to either institution. It's actually kind of funny to see the weird looks I get (especially when I mix in a NC State hat with an ISU shirt). The only people who have called me out have been my students in laboratories that I have TA'ed.
I will admit though, that it makes it easier that the schools are so far from each other, and are in separate conferences. Should I have gone to a Big 12 conference school for graduate school, I don't think I would have supported their athletic department, but also probably have not worn ISU gear on their campus.

Re: A.J. Klein comments on Iowa State students wearing Iowa shirts on campus
The last time I wore a Hawk shirt on ISU's campus was before I was a student there, and still a student at the U of I. Since then, I'd wear my iSU stuff on campus, because, well, I was an ISU student. Obviously still a huge Hawks fan, but not ashamed to cheer for my school.
Iowa-ISU games for me are very conflicting. I'm relatively ******/happy whatever the outcome, although I'd be lying if I didn't say I'd still rather Iowa win. Call me a DB or whatever, but since I paid my own way through 4 years of schooling, I figure I've earned the right to be a split fan.
Of course, splitting my loyalties gets me a lot of ribbing on both sides. You'll have the douchey Iowa alums who claim I shouldn't be a Hawk fan since I went to Iowa State. You'll have the douchey ISU people who claim I should have gone to the U of I if I wanted to be a Hawk fan. And then you have normal people who dish out a little teasing, but don't take it so personally.

This week is fair game to say anything to opposing fans, but generally it shouldn't matter. As long as it doesn't lead to physical assaults there is nothing wrong with being a fan of either team.
It's not like most of us even played for either teams....... we are fans..... that's it, who gives a fart.

On that note, last week my wife and I went to a minor league baseball game here in North Carolina. The home team (Carolina Mudcats) had a 1st baseman that was striking out left and right. He was a Hawkeye (per the program) so Stacy started to heckle him about being a Hawkeye every time he struck out... It was hilarious (to me anyway).
I know... cool story bro, but that $%*+ was funny.
