Promoting Messingham to OC Wasn't A Mistake
It's a dirty job, but somebody had to do it. Start this thread, that is.
The offense showed a little imagination, we got a trick play, and some decent playcalling against a good defense. It helped that the OL hung together better, and players executed.
I'll let you take it from here, but CCM deserved this thread.
We got a new Marshall here in town, and his name's Paul Rhoads, and the times, they is a'changin'.

Remains to be seen. Outside of the two pass plays over the top to Lenz, the offense and play calling was still pretty bad in the first half. The second half was a much better representation of what I want to see from an ISU offense.
I'm not ready to say Mess has arrived. What I will say is he improved a lot over a week and a first half of a game. Do what he did this week a few more weeks throughout the game and I'll be a lot more comfortable with him calling the plays.
Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice? Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this. -

I liked the play calling. I still wish we'd see some more creativity with the run calling, and by that I mean some pitch options, triple options, and some West, Horne, and Nealy runs. Obviously the one with Horne worked well today. I'd be surprised if Messingham doesn't work out well in the end. Rhoads has been a really good judge of coaching talent thus far, I'd think that would continue with Coach Mess.

Even if he was perfect this week, that doesn't make the failure last week disappear.

And he is learning, but with the defnese we have not a lot of time for on the job learning. Where a lot of this stuff was last week I would like to know, but glad it was better this week. Still have some major offensive issues, but lot of progress was made.

Against KState, we do not want to make turnovers. It should be a headbanger. Woody will have a good day.
Looking forward to CFH magic for the next bball season, Georges style. -
Re: Promoting Messingham to OC Wasn't A Mistake
Which Mess shows up and calls plays against K-State? Hopefully the guy calling plays in the second half of this game. Good job, coach! Ranked teams lining up to face us in the weeks that follow, too. Improvement like this will be needed every week to keep us winning. Go State!

the play calling still wasn't what i had hoped to see, but it was better than last week for sure... i will wait until the end of the season to make up my mind about mess being a good hire or not... liked the call for lenz to throw. that was a good call. why not? he has the highest QB rating in ncaa history!

It's the guy's first ever time as an OC, I think we had to expect some growing pains. Yes, the Tech game was awful, but if we see improvements every week from here on out I think everyone can just leave their torches and pitchforks at home.

Re: Promoting Messingham to OC Wasn't A Mistake
I think it's a bit early to say this. And yes, I was a bit too early in predicting his demise last week as well.
I still have not seen yesterday's performance yet, but based on the box score and the fact we had 2 long bombs, I'd say Mess hasn't gotten any better other than we had a QB in there that didn't turn it over 4 times and who actually connected on a couple long passes that Steele had been consistently overthrowing (Iowa game for example).
I'm going to watch the replay on cyclones.tv and then have a better answer on this topic. I was glad to see we ran one trick play that worked to perfection though. But I'm curious other than a couple plays if I will notice much difference in this offense?
I will say that getting the ball to Jarvis West only once in the entire game is stupid though. And I think we need to get Nealy involved too somehow. But I'm going to watch the replay today and see. The statistics don't really seem to indicate we've gotten any better though. TCU dominated us offensively. Winning the turnover battle by 4 yesterday was the entire key. If they only would have had one turnover like we did, then they probably win.
