Should we go to dual kicker set?

Since Arceo seems to be deathly afraid of PAT's but seems to have no trouble kicking 45+ yard field goals and does decent on kickoffs...is it time to have Netten do the PAT's and Arceo the long stuff? It would let each of them focus on just one type of kicking situation, and hopefully give us the best of both worlds.

Downside - well, we have to burn Netten's redshirt. But he's a kicker, not a DE or something that we really NEED the extra year of development time.

    Thoughts? Am I totally crazy?

I think it is a no just for the fact that XPs help a kicker to get in rhythm and be confident on their FG attempts. Unless it is a situation like where we had Mahoney who could kick from 55+, you try to keep it the same guy. I'm guessing Arceo is on an extremely short leash with the PATs though. Could cost him his spot.

FWIW: Arceo is 3rd worst in the country in PAT percentage.

The two below him are 3/4 and 9/11. That effectively puts him in at least 2nd to last because 4 is a small sample size, and possibly even dead last or close to it.

Our high school team is awful and the kicker's kicks look like wounded ducks but he has a better PAT percentage than this guy who I always call Eddie Arcaro and I'm not sure what his real name is.

If no one on the team is better than him, maybe CPR should have some open auditions like he did for punter when he got Kirby.

I'm convinced our current situation is going to cost a win when he misses a PAT.

What makes me nervous about this is, this weekends games against KSU is a good candidate for a game where a kicker could lose us the contest.

From the thread title I thought the OP was suggesting we roll out two kickers each time and let the defense guess which one would actually kick the ball.

I'm for this! Like a soccer free kick with two guys over the ball.

I would try anything that led to making extra points. I don't care how odd or extreme the solution.

Well, I care a little, since 3TrueFans is on, and I'm a whole lot of frightened by his imagination.

Re: Should we go to dual kicker set?

When CPR stated that the 2 kickers were equal and gave the nod to EA, I guess I thought they were both doing well. With the current run of missed PAT's, does that me that Netten is missing in practice as well? If so, I hope they keep the RS on Netten to see if the extra work helps him in the spring. If not, they always have the option of trying to get another kicker before summer.

What? Kirby was a scholarship punter who was the backup to Dan Kuehl for one game until Kuehl shanked a couple punts and never punted again. It's odd to me that we pulled Kirby's redshirt but won't pull one to replace a guy who is directly missing gimme points.

If Netten was better than Arceo he wouldn't be redshirted right now. Because of that, no...we have to live with the fact that we're going to miss extra points.

Re: Should we go to dual kicker set?

I really don't think it is CPR's style to roll out a kicker to do the easiest part of a kickers job. On top of burning Netten's RS it sends a bad message to the rest of the team.

*And before someone freaks out last year was a completely different situation.

Re: Should we go to dual kicker set?

Our kicking game is fairly dismal in so many ways. We are giving up huge gains on kickoff returns. Either kick it out of the endzone or on the ground! The whole extra point thing seems to be something in the water in Ames. Maybe we should serve Arceo Evian from now on....

Didn't ISU do something like this last year with Guyer and Mahoney? Guyer did all extra points and short FG's, Mahoney kicked the long ones.

Re: Should we go to dual kicker set?

Well, I guess the other option that I hadn't considered was just not even kicking PAT's - if we know we're going to miss them anyway, why not just go for 2 every time? At worst, we aren't losing any more points than we are now. At best, we actually GAIN some ground. It just steams me to throw points down the drain and you're right, Ficklone02, this weekend could be one of those games where we NEED a perfect kicker.
