I guess, as the author suggests, his life just didn't turn out like he wanted it to. Blows opportunity at college football's mecca, ND, and ends up working his way down the ladder of success to KU. He's mad this is what it has come to. He's upset so he eats and he eats because he's upset... it's a vicious cycle.
