Re: ISD: That Poor Man, Gene Chizik
My Hawkeye buddies even laugh at his failures and tell me how much better off we are now.

"Looking to the Daily for good Articles is Pointless" is what I get from this.
Didn't know Gene's daughter wrote this.
Come here to chew bubble gum and kick ***, have I. And all out of bubble gum, I am. -

It no longer operates like a real newspaper lab. Used to be a pretty high hurdle to clear to even get into print. Now everything goes so no one gets their feelings hurt. It's an activity club, like the Dungeons and Dragons club and the knitting club and the kung fu club. The Daily advisors used to be hard ***, and it resulted in a quality product. They were trying to weed out the no talents to make sure ISU J grads were good. Now the whole program is as soft as baby **** and it shows.

Want to know why newspapers are a dying medium? Here you go. Our journalists and editors are being trained to be brainless gits from the very start.
Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice? Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this. -
Re: ISD: That Poor Man, Gene Chizik
Gene is that guy that gets the good job because he knows somebody and has been cheating off of everyone else's work for years. Now...it's his show and he's failing miserably. Can't we at least cherish that life lesson?
I agree, though. That editorial was dumb.

Painful breakup, my ###. The guy flat out lied to us. Auburn got what they wanted, and Cheezy got what he deserved!! If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right!! -
Re: ISD: That Poor Man, Gene Chizik
I see the quality of the Iowa State Daily has not improved a bit in over a decade. I'm sorry but there is no way I can feel any sympathy for a man that is so full of himself and moved on to better things only to fail there too when he wasn't paying his quarterback to carry the team. I never expected Chizik to stay for a long time at ISU but he sealed his own fate and legacy at ISU with the "firmly entrenched" statement only to leave just weeks later and didn't even have the courtesy to face his players like a man before he packed up and left. He hardly even acknowledges his time at ISU either so why should any Cyclone fan wish him the best of luck? Had he been upfront from the start about his intentions while he was looking to leave town I don't think anyone would have the hard feelings they do towards him considering he went 5-19 and did us a favor by leaving town before we could eventually fire him after more failure.
Hope he enjoys coaching at some smaller program or taking a coordinator position after Auburn fires him. Will be a nice reality check for him hopefully that the game is bigger than he is and you have to build relationships in order to succeed in this business. His former players have said that his staff and Rhoads were night and day as far the relationships being built. Chizik was your best buddy during recruiting then hardly said a word to you after you got on campus while Rhoads gets to know his players and families. I bet you Chizik had to use GPS just to find Valley and Dowling every time he made a visit to scout or recruit as he just did not care to "entrench" himself here to care enough to build those relationships that will help you build a winning program here. Karma is a funny thing and Gene is about to find out what the bad side of it tastes like soon.

Re: ISD: That Poor Man, Gene Chizik
I still continue to find it interesting that there is so much more ill-will and outright hatred for Gene Chizik than for Greg McDermott. Chizik did do some good things for ISU, including recruiting a good base of players. Plus, I think an argument can be made that Paul Rhoads may not have come to ISU had Gene Chizik not been hired by Auburn precisely when he was. At Auburn, as a coordinator, Rhoads was on a path to possibly being the head coach at Auburn someday. That went out the window when Chizik was hired, and cleaned house of the existing assistant coaches, allowing Rhoads to be hired by ISU cleanly.
By comparison, I find it very hard to think of any long-term good that came out of McDermott's years at ISU, even though he was here twice as long as Chizik.

I have no ill will towards McDermott because while his strategies never worked here, he seemed like a fairly decent guy and he tried. If Gene had actually tried to hire good cordinators, been upfront about leaving, and faced his players I would have wished him the best. That's the difference for me. McDermott tried, failed, wasn't an *** to his players and everyone's better off. Gene didn't try, and was an *** so I root against him.

I have to admit I pay little attention to him now and don't spend any effort following his decline, guess I'm in the minority.
I don't do signatures. Blondes, brunettes, and red heads are a different story. -

By comparison, I find it very hard to think of any long-term good that came out of McDermott's years at ISU, even though he was here twice as long as Chizik. Major difference is how they did what they did. McDermott was simply a bad fit. In my mind he's a good coach for the right program but not here. He tried to do the right thing, and was simply unsuccessful. Chizik gave up his second year. He left us with broken promises and most importantly, he left in a distasteful way. Only giving a team 2 minutes of your time and not looking any of them in the eye is incredibly inappropriate, especially when your prerequisite for them to play for you was to look you in the eye and promise they'd work their butt off for you. Keep in mind even Arnaud was once quoted saying that Chizik saying "this job sucks" might have been true.
