I think McDermott gave it an honest try and just failed, and one problem led to another and it just sort of snowballed. And then once he left he's returned to doing fairly well, with no wrongdoing as far as we know. Its hard to have ill will against a guy that came here, gave it his all, and just didn't work out. He didn't bail immediately, he got out at a time when it was pretty clear he was doing both sides a favor.

Chizik? Everyone remembers 'firmly entrenched', but what about the events that led to that (the fact that apparently he'd been spouting off to at least one other school's coaches how little he liked being here). Or the fact that instead of hiring a competent staff he went and hired his buddies. And then once he left, he went and won a national title on the back of a player that would never have been allowed to play if the NCAA had any spine whatsoever.

Did not Chizik hire replacement coaches and then left shortly sticking us with the bill?

I thought the analogy about the ex-girlfriend to be interesting... I had an ex who ended the relationship much like the Chiz did with ISU, and I sure as hell didn't feel bad when she gained weight....

I'm guessing the author has little knowledge of commitment and integrity in relationships.

A favorable article on the Chiz? WTF. Do I root for him to win? No. Will I ever root for him to win? No. At Auburn he's left with pretty good players from Tubberville and lands a couple of winners, and Cam/Malzahn/Fairley combination is the perfect storm for a hands-off guy to win a title. Learned that from the master, Mack Brown, who won with decent D and an out-of-this-world performance by Vince Young. But without those guys, he can't sustain a winning program at a football school. I used to say he could coach fine as long as he had 4-star players to cover his flaws. Now not even that level of player hides his faults. Things really have come full circle.

I have no ill will towards McDermott. He was a bad fit at ISU but I respect the system he tried to run and he left when he knew it was best to move on before he got fired. He's a good MVC coach but his system does not work in the Big 12. I think both he and ISU fans wanted it to work at ISU and I don't think we can say the same about Chizik as it is obvious he was never fully committed to ISU. In hindsight Pollard got 2 mulligans when Chizik and McDermott left as both looked like great hires at the time but never panned out. Rhoads and Hoiberg have been unbelievable and there are no doubts they are committed to building winners here for the long haul. There will be programs that come after them but I think ISU will do what it takes to keep them here as long as they can. If I had to bet which coach gets hired away it would be Rhoads but I think it would have to be a pretty big program for him to leave the comfort he has living this close to home but I would not rule it out if he keeps doing what he is doing. Hoiberg I think barring a program like North Carolina or a prestigious program of that caliber calling will stick with ISU and build it to an elite program. We have some history and it is much easier to maintain success at ISU in basketball than football I think.

When I see CF posts after ISU losses, finding solace because Auburn also lost that same weekend — what?

I don't know where Rhoads might be able to take this program, but not long after he won more games in Season 1 than Chizik did in two seasons, that's when I stopped caring about Gene's career path.

I can see that, but there's also the case of football junkies. We look at every game with eyes on who we want to win. So it may not be OMG-HATE-HIMMMMM obsession for people to root for Gene to lose, just a good enough reason as any when picking a desired winner.

WRT myself, in addition to the above, I don't hate Gene, there's a lot more he'd have to do to me personally to make me hate him. However, I have come to the conclusion that he appears to be a bad person. I don't like to see bad people succeed. When he was hired, I thought...is this the right guy? I jumped in, thinking JP knew what he was doing. But that inkling was there...he wins with good talent, can he win with...not that? He didn't, then he left in a low class fashion. But somehow, he was still the hottest prospect out there. Bring in good old cammyshakes, and he gets a national title...really? Kept wondering if the world was askew...maybe it's just the SEC. I am satisfied with his failure, but it's more about the hopes that maybe the good guys do win, and maybe the horrible individuals that would kick their momma into traffic if she had a good chunk of change in her will for them do get theirs in the end.

I guess I see Gene as "I'm better than you", and CPR as "I'm not better than you, but I'll beat you because I'll out work you, and I'll out last you every single time". I'm better than you will not succeed at ISU any time soon, and I hope it doesn't ever, because the "I'll out work you and I'll out last you" is a much more stable foundation.

Even his ONE, career highlight, successful player (Scam Newton) is falling apart in the NFL, proving Gene taught him no character. Any team that falls for hiring him as a head coach now is an absolute sucker.

I cheer against Gene each and every game. He is a piece of ****. I can't wait to see him fired.

I wonder what the reaction would be if he lasted longer. I was already pretty frustrated with his progress at the end of the second season because the team/players didn't seem prepared at all in some of the games. If he lasted another couple season I don't know if I would be so happy to get rid of him that I don't even care about him even more or hate him even more.

The thing I really hated about him is that it seemed like it was a lack of effort and he didn't try. I thought he might be a good hire at the time in paper but I remember watching the press conference with him and I didn't get a good feeling because I didn't think he had a lot of passion behind what he was saying. I can handle losing a bunch of games but getting blownout in most of the losses makes it pretty hard to watch. I can remember watching a few games and being so frustrated that I left early.
