Question for all the Ref types out there
Can you extend a half based on an offensive penalty?
I was watching the USC at Arizona game and Arizona kicked a field goal as time expired in the first half. But there was offensive holding on the kick. The refs said they would extend the half for one more play. Arizona ended up missing the re-kick, so it didn't matter, but I've never heard of extending the half on an offensive penalty.

Youd have to extend the half... usc accepted the penalty, therefore making them rekick from further back... otherwise they would get 3 points even though they held on the play...

I'm no ref, but my guess is, it can end on an offensive penalty if the defense choose to accept (which in this case, was a good choice).

Re: Question for all the Ref types out there
I would have guessed if the defense accepted the penalty, the kick doesn't count but since the time is now out for the half, no retry. Otherwise, couldn't you commit a penalty on purpose if you had a bad snap, or something like that?

If they made the kick and there's a penalty, you either give them the 3 or take the penalty. Taking the penalty will give them another chance from further back but if they made it you make them try again.
