Re: Did Steele win his job back?

As you can see in my CF user name, I am not a huge Steele fan. Tonight he was very impressive, and I loved the tempo at which our offense ran at. Here is the problem though...

    1. His interception was literally right to the Baylor defender, and then he threw another one right at the safety who just dropped it.

    2. The fumbles when we are ahead by 2 scores CANNOT happen

    3. Steele threw a few too many jump balls, especially the ones where everyone wanted pass interference.

    4. He is going to get his neck broken. He never tries to avoid contact at the end of plays....

All in all, he played extremely well tonight with the exception of those things. If he figures those out, I think we could have a very talented quarterback on our team.

Re: Did Steele win his job back?

I don't see how you could possibly bench him after he has a record-tying performance, not to mention his personal best game as a Cyclone. What would possibly be the justification? Right now, it's pretty clear to me that despite any faults he may have, Steele definitely gives ISU the best chance to win any game. He's not perfect (what QB is?) but he is more capable now than any other options that ISU has from what I can tell.

I would be more concerned about the 7 or 8 dropped passes if I were the OC or the receivers coach. At first I thought maybe it was the cold......but then most of the Baylor receivers did not seem to be having that same problem. Had those 8 passes been caught, Steele's performance would have been even much more impressive, and who knows what the score would have been?

Granted Baylor's defense is terrible, and I am not sure they can win a game in the Big 12 this year, although they do still have Kansas to play, so there is some hope for them.

If there is any major criticism I have of Steele, it is that sometimes I think he throws too soft. He needs to put a little more zip on the ball and get it in there, although with the drops last night, maybe that would not work. It just seems like sometimes he kind of floats it out there, almost aiming it too carefully. I would love to see him throw a little harder.

    Completely agree with this.

Sometimes last night, Steele tried to get too cute and throw some soft passes when they should have been darts. But overall, he played outstanding. One bad pass, and that was intercepted. The only other possible INT was because our WR's route got cut off by the ref.

But Steele plays now until he does something deserving of being yanked IMO.

Steele doesnt have to play well to win the starter job.

He just needs to not be completely pathetic as his counterpart has been.

Which is very lame and pathetic. Your username puts you in the similar loserville category as "Cyclone fans" with Hawk-hate stuff in their username. I can't fathom why someone would create an account specifically to hate on a college athlete. I pity you that your life must suck so much - you have to resort to that in order to make you feel better.

Steele played a very good game last night - as did the entire offense. I would hope that would be the case, since Baylor's defense is about as pathetic as "NoJantzesLeft". Regardless, have to give credit to Steele. For the most part, limited mistakes and had his receivers helped him out in the first quarter - the game would have been over by half.

I think Steele has the far better upside over Barnett. Ideally, Barnett would be the better QB as he has more years left - but he's just not progressing. He makes fewer mistakes throwing the ball - but he also misses too many throws by trying to guide the ball in.

It's critical the revolving QB door ends soon - as it's drastically impacting our QB/receiver timing. There are too many times I can see the receivers and QB are not in sync. The ball nearly picked where Gary stopped on the route near midfield is a great example.

The ref had more to do with that than timing.

I don't fully disagree - that was not a great sample. There were a few others like that too (pass was flag, route was post).

Yes he did. I believe CPR knows best, so I support his decision. He sees these guys every day.

Here let me address your concerns...

    1. His interception was literally right to the Baylor defender, and then he threw another one right at the safety who just dropped it. - you are going to have a couple bad throws a game with Steele, that's just something we should all accept right now. Moving on.
    2. The fumbles when we are ahead by 2 scores CANNOT happen - that was a great play by the Baylor defender. If you want to blame something, blame the play calling because we should not have been running the zone read with Steele trying to protect a lead. Ever.
    3. Steele threw a few too many jump balls, especially the ones where everyone wanted pass interference. - he was also getting drilled in the face a few too many times. I can live with the dead ducks as long as a receiver is in the area. Typically the WR should win those battles, either by catching it or drawing a flag.
    4. He is going to get his neck broken. He never tries to avoid contact at the end of plays.... - I will agree and disagree here. He does avoid contact but he does so by diving head 1st. He needs to leard to slide and run out of bounds.
All in all, he played extremely well tonight with the exception of those things. If he figures those out, I think we could have a very talented quarterback on our team.
    - all in all he won the ******* game! It is unreal how people will come on this board and try to disect every little thing like they are a coach.

No QB competition this week. With OU coming to town, Jantz needs as many reps with the 1st team as he can get. Offense needs to move forward knowing who will be taking snaps on Saturday and I think they will.

Yes, (too)many examples to choose from, but imo it was great sample. The fact we almost gave the ball away due to our WR having to avoid the ref almost perfectly exemplifies our struggles in the passing game the past few years... Poor throw? Maybe the timing was bad or the WR was off in his route. Perhaps the WR lacked effort. Could have been miscommunication. The QB should have thrown elsewhere, assuming the QB had the time for such a look.
