Re: Steele
Steele definitely has the physical tools to be a great QB. I'm still considering the INT though a flash of classic Steele. It was just at such a bad time. You just can't turn the ball over in the red zone, no matter what. I have no problem going with Steele for the rest of the games, I've seen our other options and it really is six of one, half a dozen of another. Other than constantly wondering when the next turnover is coming, or being ****** we are still running the read option, I do like watching the guy play. He's definitely exciting to watch when he's on. Let's hope he stays on.

Re: Steele
Im looking for Messs to continue to give steele, "winable" and confidence boosting throws...ernst on shallow crossers, slip screens and slants to our WO's, and our backs coming out of the backfield to start against OU. Definetely boads well since they blitz so often, throw in behind the blitzers to slow them down. As the game progresses then open up the deep plays, IMO steele gets in trouble when we come out and just start slingin it deep and when he is on the run, keep him tamed down, build the confidence and then turn him loose and allow his playmaking ability to take over, at times he is his own worst enemy as he feels he has to carry the team!

Re: Steele
I think the Bears gave our receivers a cushion because they were expecting less accurate QB play. Looking at the previous game with JB, his pass completion percentage was atrocious. They might've decided to protect the run more as opposed to play tight man coverage?

This! I have been saying the exact same thing since Uconn. The kid needs some confidence boosting passes to get in a rhythm before he starts slinging it. Iowa last year and Baylor are perfect examples of this working.

We are going to have to protect him better and get creative on offense against Oklahoma. They will blitz every single play. And they should! Lots of quick slants and slipping the running back out (a la Woody's TD Saturday) should help with this situation.
I think it will be imperative on Saturday not to put the whole game on Steele's shoulders. Put him in situations where he has easier throws, and at least try to run the ball (might be tough to do against OU).
If he can get through the game on Saturday with his confidence intact, we're in an excellent position to win our last 3 games.

Re: Steele
No reason to change. WVA and Texas are very similar to Baylor (but better) so he is clearly the guy for those games. OU he has to play. And Kansas I want to put points on the board against and not win an ugly one with our D.
So he is the guy.
One bonehead move won't be a big deal and he'll do more than enough to make up for it if the receivers don't have awful drops.
I have a feeling a new guy is going to want to drop everything thrown his way this week don't think it will be Horne but my gut gives me a bad feeling that there will be a decent amount of bad drops Saturday. So hopefully he plays through it and keeps slinging.

Re: Steele
I think right now, Steele's guaranteed occasional boneheadedness isn't nearly the detriment to the team as JB's consistent ineffectiveness.

Re: Steele
I worry mostly about guys not working harder to make catches, fighting for position, coming off routes to help a scrambling QB, etc.
Example: West on the 3rd TD. We need more of that. And much less of the guys who aren't making plays for passes that aren't perfectly thrown.

I still want to see more "safe" gadget plays. Pass from running back. Flea Flicker. Both plays have an escape clause and could be run every game.
AND, can our special teams coach get his head out of his ***** --before it costs us bigtime.

This is an outstanding post. I think Coach Mess did a good job of giving Steele some easier throws to start against Baylor. Give him some confidence, then unleash his playmaking ability. Steele will need to play a similarly great game against OU and hopefully Messingham's gameplan continues to allow him to succeed a la Baylor.

It's not his fault Arceo is inconsistent and just isn't a very good kicker. Or are you talking about the onsides kick? That definitely had to be approved by Rhoads. And Kirby is one of the best punters out there although I didn't think he had his best game against Baylor.
I thought Steele looked a lot better at running the zone read this week. Maybe he's getting more familiar with it and playing against Big 12 competition.
Hilton Coliseum was specifically built to hold in sound with a solid concrete structure, steel doors, and a crowd that sits just a few feet from the court. With a fan base that frequently ranks among the nations largest crowds, players from opposing teams, as well as Iowa State, have said that the floor has shaken due to the loudness of the crowd -
Re: Steele
I think another reason Jantz had such a great game was the pass protection. Most of the time he had all day to throw. This is probably a combination of the Baylor defense sucking and the offensive line stepping up. Regardless, this needs to be a common theme the rest of the year for the offense to be effective.

Re: Steele
Some of the people on this thread need to stop watching ISU football. It sounds like it is bad for your health. Steele is 4-1 on the season and winning football games. ISU is 1 win off of going ot a bowl yet you still come on this site and look to pick apart Steele and crush all the fun and put water on any dreams.
I would not want to be your child. STOP CRUSHING MY DREAMS!!!!

I would not want to be your child. STOP CRUSHING MY DREAMS!!!! Shut up and get back in your box. What are you doing out of the basement again, anyway!? One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr -

On-sides receiving team almost lost the ball, when everyone in the stadium knew what was coming.
Kick-off coverages are a disaster waiting to happen.
Kick-off and punt returns are non-existent. (Hint. It starts with a plan.)
yes. the punting overall has been great.
My guess is the special teams coach could AWOL for a week and no one would notice.
