Re: Texas is hunting for a coach
I don't know that UT is the problem, the problem is if UT poaches a bigger name coach and that program comes calling.
I don't do signatures. Blondes, brunettes, and red heads are a different story. -
Re: Texas is hunting for a coach
Why can't they just keep Mack? In all honesty though I think he will be there through next season. I love having Texas bad, but it would be insane if a Chip Kelly or Saban went there. I cannot imagine what a coach like that could do with all the talent there is in Texas. I won't be surprised if they push for Saban since he has proven he has left for money when he went to Bama and just a couple days before that he said there was no chance he was going there. Those who think Rhoads is with us for the long haul, I agree with. This man knows life is more than just money. I mean look at Wally Burnham. He left a school, not for the money, for the opportunity to coach with his son. Wally had 1 good reason to come to Iowa State. How many does Rhoads have to stay here? This guy is here for the long haul.

We didn't have those dollars. It wasn't possible to have the facilities and coaches to get there. Now, we still have less money but that extra money is going toward things that give a marginal competitive return. Our extra money got us the IPF, and the ability to pay quality coaches. UT's get's them a fancier facility maybe but it doesn't likely give them anything over us in terms of what is needed. Obviously fancy draws recruits and fancy puts of a perception but there are kids who will come to ISU, see what we have and realize that's good enough to make them as good of a football player as possible compared to what UT has. I'm not saying we are their equal, I'm just syaing that gap in money doesn't mean nearly as much now. UT is buying bells and whistles. We are buying engines and tires. I hope you are right! -
Re: Texas is hunting for a coach
Mack is gone. He has been bad mouthing the Longhorn Network. The problem there is that his last two supporters are the two biggest LHN supporters. For Mack being an X and O guy this was a poor strategic move.

I think he'd rather win a few more championships there and retire whenever he wants to as a hall of fame coach. A detour to UT would be risky and not a step up at all.
If UT offers more money, then Saban can get a raise from Bama. They can afford it.

Nope, the Longhorns are BY FAR the most profitable FB team in the country netting $71M profit out of $96M in 2011 revenue alone: The Business Of College Football - Forbes
Some $24 MILLION below that is #2 Notre Dame. Think about that. UT football alone brought in more than double Iowa State Athletic Dept's entire $48M budget! ... in other words, Texas can buy whatever coach they want in the world and neither party will bat in eye ... including CPR for the right price and prestige. Enter Cael Sanderson (altho he wasn't Iowa born I realize).
Charisma aside, I just don't think CPR knows enough talented assistants to together have nearly as much recruiting power as Mack has been able to muster - at least not down here in fertile Texas - and I mean being able to convince FIVE star talent to sit 2 or even 3 deep on the bench all season!

Money won't make CPR move. I don't care what the amount is. If CPR ever leaves, it will not be because of money.

Re: Texas is hunting for a coach
I heard one of Mack's recent interviews where he commented on the LHN, and I think he has a legitimate gripe. He has no lattitude to address the team without the cameras rolling. I believe there has to be some degree of privacy in a locker room. If everythng is subjected to immediate Twitter escalation to the masses, you have to filter every word. That makes it impossible to get your point across to a large group of young men. To get their attention, you have to, at least on occasion, speak their in their vernacular.
But Georgie Patton was once asked why someone of his stature didn't clean up his language when addressing the troops. He explained that it was a ploy to capture the attention of young men long enough to get his message across. Georgie paid a steep price for what we now call politically incorrect communication, although, if you know your history, he was able to redeem himself down the line when given the chance.
Football is by no means war, but I think the management analogy fits. Coach Mack may take the fall for throwing bricks at the LHN (glass house), but that is a battle the next coach will have to fight if he does not. If Mack is really a lame duck, then he is in a perfect position to say things others only wish they could say.
If the LHN masterminds are smart, they'll propose expanding the network to cover the entire Big 12. The model is proven in the B1G, and if it applied to the whole league, the rules could be adjusted. Whether the LHN dissolves or expands, it would result in a more level playing field for Texas, and for the Big 12 as a whole. Without change, the LHN is basically a boat anchor around Bevo's neck.

I'm really hoping the bolded happens. They need content or the network will fold. Hopefully they figure out that there is a lot more money in covering the whole conference and then they can get the network on a lot more TV screens.

There's no money right now in a Big 12 Network. Unless of course you plan on showing women's basketball and volleyball on said network.
