Austin Roll Call
Bunch of us are road tripping down for the game Saturday. Who else is coming down? Also if anyone has recommendations for places to hit around 6th Street or else it would be greatly appreciated!
Lets get to 6-4!

Re: Austin Roll Call
My dad will be there. I have converted him. His first time at DKR in the visitor's section resulted in a win for the Cyclones. Can't say the same for my brother. He'll be sportin burnt orange. And as for me, I wont be back home until December. I'd love to visit DKR sporting the cardinal and gold.

Re: Austin Roll Call
I'll be there with a few friends. Flying into Austin Friday, watching ISU's basketball opener somewhere Friday night, then heading out early to go tailgating Saturday morning.

Re: Austin Roll Call
So I know the infamous (East) 6th Street is always the first thing in mind. But it's not QUITE what it used to be 2 years ago. The recession has kind of tarnished its rep with more muggings, fights and such. But some of my long-time favs still there are more the dives like Casino El Camino and Emo's who have survived over and over amongst the surrounding pop clubs. Casino has a small kitchen with the best burgers in town and Emo's always has great touring bands. Otherwise walk west to hit more the college crowd like Shakespeare's, Dizzy Rooster (MTV Real World hangout), or Blind Pig or the newer spots like Chupacabra or Moose Knuckle.
But if you REALLY want to check out the cooler side of Austin, then walk 6 blocks south along I-35 to the new Rainey St. district of some 8 bars and growing FAST. A bunch of 70+ yr old houses newly renovated in really cool ways to laid back lounge bars with full stage shows of bands any given night in their back yards! THAT is where you'll find more the hipper UT and Austin 20/30's crowd lately.
Then there is also WEST 6th Street (aka Market District by Whole Foods HQ). It's about 8 blocks west (a pedicab ride) of about 14 bars. Seems more of the older UT undergrads go here as it's a bit more classy with more lounges and a sorta dance club like The Ranch. But there are "new dives" there, too.
Also, around the corner just off W 6th is fairly new The Rattle Inn on Nueces St - which is the official Iowa State bar Saturday night after our ISU tailgate. Wear anything Iowa State and get $2 domestics or $3 imports. And since the weather will be in the 70's you'll dig their big roof bar up top overlooking downtown.

$12 online now for all the BBQ and beer you can drink before and after the game (you'll swap your ticket for a wristband to come and go as you please). We'll have satellite TVs there, too. But come Friday Noon I'm stopping the online sales and you'll get to pay $15 at the door ;-)

Lets get to 6-4! Two of us coming down from Dallas area. Don't know the 6th St area at all, but there will be Cyclone tailgates going on.

Re: Austin Roll Call
My wife and I are taking a half-day off and heading down from Dallas shortly after noon on Friday. We were there two years ago when we took out Texas and am looking forward to this opportunity!

Re: Austin Roll Call
If you are homesick, check out Tenderland on Manor road. A couple of Iowa Expats are cooking awesome tenderloins. They are related to the Jethros BBQ folks in Des Moines.

And it has an Iowa connection so now I know why Yelp gives it such great tenderloin reviews ;-)
Guys, Tenderland is only 10 short blocks due east of the stadium! Might be kinda packed after the game with all the UT foot traffic around there but that should die down by dinner time (they close at 7p tho). And do NOT be scared off by food trailers here! Austin is renown for these all over town. They almost ALWAYS have better home-cooked food than most traditional restaurants - and yes, they are constantly checked with stringent health code inspections.
