4A champ game, did refs get it right?
In champ game tonight ankeny v CR late in the 4th quarter with CR driving but in trouble; 3 and 25 and the refs throw a flag against ankeny D fence for unsportsman like conduct against. They give them the 15 yards but not the automatic first down. IS this right?
GREAT GAME TONIGHT. Crowd was really loud in the 4th quarter and neither team could hear the snap count. Awesome close game and I have no dog in the fight, just seams that they got the call wrong.
I'm not trying to be difficult, it comes naturally.... -

We were debating that as well. Think they got it wrong.

Not sure if it was right or wrong but it was a pretty weak flag to begin with.

Not sure if they got it correct but it was kind of a weak call in the first place.
Edit: Apparently great minds think alike.

Personal fouls are not automatic first downs in high school.

Personal foul is not an automatic 1st down in HS. The question would be why not. I don't know what happened but it must have been down and more than 15 to go.

I wondered that as well and looked it up. For high school, its not an automatic first down. However, I thought they moved the chains and said it was still 3rd down.

Yes, a 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike is NOT automatic 1st down at this level. The call is correct, the debate on the rule will likely be fair game.

Officials got it right. They were put in a tough situation tonight. Very sloppy game by both teams. Very unsatisfying ending.
Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating. -

But I thought the chain gang and the score board put it at `1st down, LOL. At least the head ref knew what was going on.

Chain gang had it right. Score board was wrong.

Re: 4A champ game, did refs get it right?
Just to lay out the situation for those who weren't watching. Xavier ball down by 6 with about 1:30 to go. It's are and 25 near mid field qb passes out to wide receiver and he is looking to throw a double pass but gets in trouble and throws it back to the qb. The qb dropped it but it looked close to being a lateral and an Ankeny player comes in and hits him as he is trying to get the ball off turf. It just knocks him back a step, not even to the ground. It was so loud in there that you probably wouldn't here a whistle and think it might be live ball.
