Better off buying single game tickets?

From an economic standpoint (not a pride or alumni standpoint), would we be better off buying single-game tickets rather than season tickets? Last year we bought each game separately and because we couldn't get into the Iowa game decided to buy season tickets this year. Each game this year there have been available tickets in our section (albeit higher up) for every game a few days prior to game day.

So... we paid $950 for two tickets and cyclone club donation. That works out to about $68/ticket per game. If we would have purchased single game ticket it would have been $790 ($395/pp x 2). Going forward, why would I willingly spend 17% more to get the same tickets?

Off topic - I wish they would get rid of Cyclone Club pricing for football and just charge a certain price per ticket per game. the whole business of not knowing your specific seats/varying donations is kind of confusing (why do they do that?)

Non-profit status and tax deductions would be my guess.

For one, easier to get people to donate more when they can write off a portion on their taxes. Also easier to get more money when businesses are willing to match the donation.

Re: Better off buying single game tickets?

In my opinion I enjoy not having to worry about where my tickets will be located. I also enjoy being able to purchase a parking pass.

My donation to the cyclone club goes towards supporting all student athletes and if I get the ability to watch football 6-7 times a year because of that then I am happy.

To each his own. I just feel that my season ticket purchase and donation help the program move forward.

I tried that last year because our fall was crazy.... The result was that I couldn't find a ticket for the Texas game... And my tickets were usually pretty crappy.

I have a feeling that you will struggle to get tickets to 2-3 games next year.

Re: Better off buying single game tickets?

For many people they buy tickets to BOTH football and basketball. The Cyclone Club donation is a yearly membership that works for both. So supporters of multiple sports who buy season tickets actually get more bang for their buck in terms of the Cyclone Club membership cost.

Going forward, it is entirely a personal decision to make concerning season tickets. I will continue to buy season tickets and make the Cyclone Club contribution because I want to make sure I have a ticket to the games. I like the seats I have and the people around me in our section. IMO, as we go forward, the demand for ISU football is going to increase. I see a possible expansion to the SEZ in the future. And if I end up paying a bit more I like to think that in some small way my season ticket purchases have made it possible.

Loyalty to the University and program. Feels like were building something. Sitting with the same people for years, enjoy their company.

Re: Better off buying single game tickets?

The tickets and donation levels exist because it has been done at all major schools for years and years and years. A great way to help subsidize the athletic department.

Without season tickets, you will likely be paying more to go to each game overall if you went to all of them vs. season tickets as the demand and program improves. 3 years ago, that would not have been the case outside of 1 game a year $20 tickets were pretty easy to come across.

For me, the camaraderie with the people who sit around me year after year makes it worthwhile. I've made some good friends with those people and it's nice to know you're not going to be sitting next to a ******.

Paraphrasing Paul Rhoads at the 2011 GC spring game...."there's going to be a day where you can't buy an ISU ticket!"

Get aboard of get relegated to sitting in the corners for top dollar. For now you can stil snag some decent single game seats, but if the season ticket holders numbers continue to climb like they have, you're going to keep moving further and further towards the corners.

Re: Better off buying single game tickets?

Since I graduated, I have bought hillsides and stood in the upper student section. The last two years, I have donated so I could get a parking pass. This year I bought actual seats. I really enjoy the people we sit around. I bought two seats and requested to be next to a friend, who also bought two seats. Another group of friends is 6 rows down from us and it turns out a group that I have known since grade school has tickets in our row 5 seats down. We have also enjoyed those that we don't know but sit around.

I paid $610 for the two season tickets, Cyclone Club donation, and parking pass. In addition, I paid $90 for seat-backs. Very much worth all of the $700 I paid. I would rather know where my seat will be every game and that I enjoy sitting around the people we do sit around, than save some money on individual tickets.

I love not having to worry about going on stubhub or scalping or being sold out. I have the same tickets, in my same spot, sitting next to the same cool people who were once strangers but you build relationships with. That's what makes CyclONE NATION and sports fun for me. Plus the mutual love of tailgating.
