I can't play this. Both are important, and they are even inter-related. If we lose the bowl game, we're more likely to lose to Tulsa next year due to a lack of confidence.

Confidence vs a team is such an incredibly small factor that it shouldn't even register on any kind of scale measuring things that effect the game. This is freaking Tulsa, not Oklahoma.

Bowl game, we need that. We can rebound from a lost next year, unless some think we will run the table which is unlikely.

What do we gain going 7-6 vs 6-7? What if next year we have the chance to go 8-4 as opposed to 7-5 in the regular season? That would open up a shot at a 9 win season.
I think there is a much bigger difference between 8/9 wins than there is 7/6 wins.
For me, the biggest thing about bowl games that aren't prestigious or nationally relevant is that we get extra practices to get better to get to one that is prestigious or nationally relevant.
EDIT: This would be a good topic to write about for CW while filling the time till the bowl.

EDIT: This would be a good topic to write about for CW while filling the time till the bowl. Well, from a national media prospective, they look at "bowl records" a lot when it comes to post season play. This does not factor in who/when/where we play at all. Next year if we went 8-4, or 7-5 because of this scenerio, will hurt us very marginally, as the extra wins in conference will mean more than the loss to tulsa on the road (them coming off a conference championship, and a bowl win).

I guess I just don't think that is a big deal at all. 7-6 has been done plenty of times at ISU. I want the chance to do more than that. I want to take the next step. That's why I would take the win next year.
Although obviously this is all hypothetical and we have more than a fair chance at beating them both this year and next year.

Re: Would you rather....
Bowl games at 6-6 are just not a big deal at all. A better chance at a 7-5 or 8-4 season and a better bowl is worth so, so, so much more.

Re: Would you rather....
If we can't beat Tulsa 3 times in a 12 month period...our program is not where it needs to be. WIN THEM ALL!!

Re: Would you rather....
After the dust settles a bowl game is nothing more than a add-on exhibition (unless of course you happen to play in one of the top half dozen).
The regular season game has real weight considering it'd be an early season loss to a perceived lesser team.

Re: Would you rather....
If we lost either, I would view that as a major disappointment, but we need to be 3-0 against sub-par non-conference competition consistently moving forward.
Sorry Hawkeyes...
The campaign starts now. November 6, 2012. -
Re: Would you rather....
If I had to pick one, it would be next season and it isn't even close. Bowl wins are nice but at the level of bowl game we've been going to, they really mean nothing except for maybe some momentum going into next year. But if we lose to Tulsa in 2013 that momentum will be gone. Just like all non-con games, the Tulsa game will be an important one to get to 6+ wins next year.
