Re: I am veryexcited for 2013,
If Jenson and Woods start the season as starters, they sure aren't finishing as them. The younger more talented guys will beat them out.

If Jensen and Woods start the year, the younger guys will have to improve to be deemed more talented. Consider me doubtful that the needed improvement would happen in less than 3 months...see how long it is taking Irving to learn how to be a Big 12 Dlineman.

I have to agree with you on this one. I think 2013 might just take us a step backwards in the W/L collumn. With that said, I think 2014 will see us back in a bowl game and in 2015 we will see that elusive 8 win season.

Iowa State doesn't have to get the upper hand in 52-45 shootouts. It can succeed if we see more 31-28 wins instead of 31-21 losses.
Re: I am veryexcited for 2013,
They need experience. The talent is there.

Point. And I think that with a little bit of improvement on the OL (as four upperclassmen returning starters would suggest, along with a healthy Dika or Williams) plus the QB position stabilizing could easily result in such a modest offensive improvement.
If there are questions about youth on defense, it's only fair for the offense to carry the mail next time around.
Re: I am veryexcited for 2013,
The defense will be fine because of the quality of its coaching.
The offense will continue to dredge the bottom for the same reason.
In college football, coaching talent is most important. Since we don't have much of it on the offensive side, it is impossible for me to be optimistic about the 2013.

You must have missed what happened on the ISU defense this season after all of the on-field talent was injured...

RB: Better. Shontrelle coming back from injury hurts, but Wimberly will add explosiveness. Better if we call plays that are well-suited for the players in the game at the time. Didn't use Woody well this year.
WR: Better. I'd be worried about losing Lenz, but he was hurt most of the year anyway. I think that they'll finally have some size to combat press coverage. Better because of Quan West being healthy. However, Lenz's clutch play will be a huge loss.
TE: Better. Bibbs will add a second threat. I'm a little concerned about blocking, but hopefully they figure that out Better because of Bibbs and the high upside of the continued development of Brun.
OT: Same. I think that Gannon/Lichtenburg at Tackle can play at the level of Bykowski/Burris.
OG: Better. Tuftee won't get worse. Dika is a true Guard, unlike Lichtenburg/Gannon. Better with Dika back playing.
C: Better. Farniok will improve. Better because he will have more consistency around him.
DE: Better. I don't know that Maggitt/Nelson are huge losses. It wouldn't take much to improve from this year's group. Morrissey and Kron with more muscle will help and Bevins may see a bunch of time. Better because Rhoads spoke very highly of the class being redshirted right now.
DT/NG: Worse. I have no idea how they're going to replace McDonough Maybe not better, but I look forward to what emerges from the current redshirt class.
LB: Worse. This is going to take a huge step down. Knott and Klein cleaned up a ton of mistakes and the other guys struggled. Maybe down, but I'm not that concerned. Three years ago, we didn't know what we had in Knott and Klein.
CB: Worse. They'll miss Reeves. My hope is that someone like Rogers steps up. Watson was OK, but not great Reeves was awesome. Watson was great until he got injured. I expect him to get even better. Great coverage, nose for the ball, and able to make the hard hits to prevent catches.
S: Worse. Givens had a great season and will be tough to replace. I don't think that they'll take a huge step back, but it won't be better Maybe not better, but who predicted Givens to be this good. I think he is a product of the coaching of DBs (go for turnovers).
K: Better. Arceo ended up doing pretty well after early struggles. I think that he'll be more consistent next year. Plus, Netten can really push him. Better get better.
P: Better. I'm hoping that KVDK puts together a great SR season. We could make him much better by punting much less!
Basically, I think that the offense will be improved and the D will need RSFR to step in and play major minutes. Without looking at the schedule, I have a hard time seeing them going bowling though.
Re: I am veryexcited for 2013,
What I saw was that the D, though a little softer, continued to keep us in games. Meanwhile the offense, a monument to ineptitude, continued to suck.

A "little softer"???? :twitcy:
Re: I am veryexcited for 2013,
Man, you're all over me. Let's make this deal ... you keep your bets on the offensive coaches, I'll keep mine in the D and we'll see what pays out.

I've never said that I had any bets on the offensive coaches...perhaps that shows how well you make fine distinctions?
I am merely disagreeing with and rebutting, in both places, your assertion that coaching is all that matters.
Re: I am veryexcited for 2013,
Cycsk, do you think the freshman DEs will outperform the departing Sr DEs?

I'm not Cycsk, but I'm wondering why you (or Cycsk) would think that any freshman defensive end will be playing--when we're not even sure of Suttles will sign yet? I'm pretty sure that Trent will take a year to play, and regardless of the "departing seniors", I'd expect senior Willie Scott to be very good, and both Morrissey and Irving should be improved.
So, where do Suttles or Trent come in?
