Blocking and protection being sufficient depends on much more than the OL in this offense. Period. As Bruns said prior to the KU game, this offense goes as the QB goes.
Over the past 4 years, the QBs and RBs have hampered the performance of the OL as much as the OL has hurt the play of the QBs and RBs. It is a flaw of our offense that the success of the run game is not only about the OL doing their jobs (often against a stacked box), but the QB executing the zone-read correctly.
When plays do not work because there are more defenders than blockers, you are not losing in the trenches. You are losing in the play-book. That is a fact.
Nobody is gonna look good until we get some offensive staff upgrades. It is so obvious the offensive coaches struggle. We are the only program in the country that cannot develop a single player that resembles big 12 qb. The guys we have were recruited by plenty of quality programs. Something is happening when they get here. I like the fact that you promote from within a staff, but that usually works best when something has been working under the previous coach.
What do we have to pay this johnny football to transfer to ISU?
I remember tailgating with some players parents earlier in the season and they were saying if Grant can get a little bigger and faster this season then he'll be our guy. He has the best arm of the 3, but he's the smallest. Hoping he's not still 185 lbs as it said in that video...
I don't understand why some people are down on Sam. Against KU he might have played the best 3 quarters we've seen out of a qb in years. I know it's KU, but their defense was actually pretty decent at home. Against WVU Sam outplayed All-American Gino on a windy and cold day that made passing tough, and though he didn't play great against Tulsa, he was still our leading rusher while playing with the flu and a wet football. If Rohach gives him some competition, fine, but I feel good about the qb position with Sam out there.
I think what's most important here is that Richardson was clearly better than Jantz and Barnett....threw more accurately and ran very well. For myself, this means that if Rohach beats him out, we have made a significant upgrade at Quarterback. So we are moving in the right direction at our most critical position....and whoever wins the battle is going to be a solid player IMHO.
I like what I see out of Slingin' Sammy so far. If Rohach can beat him out for the starting job next season, I'll be just as happy.
Mesaclone is back? Sound the alarm!
I give him a week
