Interesting article from the Wall Street Journal on the calculated "value" of top FBS teams as if they were "bought and sold" like pro teams. The Big 12 has 5 in the top 25 with UT at #1. Certain teams are much lower (USC) or higher (Boston College) than I would have guessed. I think you'll be pleased with ISU's ranking.

That's what I was thinking - ahead of schools like Penn State, Tenn, Neb, A&M? I'd like to know a little more about his ranking criteria, besides what's in the article:

"Among other factors, the study looked at each program's revenues and expenses and made cash-flow adjustments, risk assessments and growth projections for each school. The resulting figures represent what the teams might fetch if they could be bought and sold like pro franchises."

It's really difficult to envision any rational system or criteria that would cause Iowa's program to be valued above those you mention. Perhaps PSU, because their "market value" might be tainted by the Sandusky scandal. But otherwise...no way.

sure he included outstanding liabilities and debt. Michigan went up by reducing debt so given psu liabilities with future. revenue losses from B1g an $100m fine am sure that would affect there worth considerably.

These factors would make a huge impact. The ways that athletic programs relate their finances to the rest of the academic institution vary widely, so comparison is very difficult.
