What we all hoped Steele would become. Maybe in a different system Steele would have been more effective, think of what Woody or Koch could have done running down hill.

The first half of the Super Bowl pretty much reminded me of the last two years with Steele Jantz.

Kock did run downhill. That was in the McCarney days where we were under center a lot (or at least way more than we are now) and had a physical downhill running attack.

Arm strength and accuracy doesn't allow Steele and CK to be in the same conversation. Steele could run, that was about it.

I'll always remember 44-41 (3 OT) however.

Is there a system that doesn't allow the QB to turn the ball over? Oh yeah, there was, it's called playing Sam Richardson instead. The guy had athletic abiliity up the wazoo, but a turnover bug he just couldn't shake. No "system" would have made a difference, SJ is what you saw on the field.

Sorry, I don't want this to be a slam on Steele. I have a lot of respect for anyone who puts on the Cardinal and gold. This was more directed at those here on this board who were never able to see the writing on the wall with Steele

Kaepernick was a raw athlete that everyone expected to play minor league baseball. 6'4 172. He had to develop big time to get where he is.

What Steele really needed was to have been able to play QB successfully in HS and have multiple years to develop as a QB. He was a good raw athlete, but you can't be that raw as an upperclassman and expect to have consistent success.

I'm just happy that we now have the OL coach whose line at Nevada helped protect Kaepernick and open the holes for him and the running backs to do what they did at Nevada for the first 3 years of Kaepernick's time there. I expect to see a lot of improvement in the OL next year, and hopefully with that, in the offense overall. Coach Klenakis was a huge, huge hire, imo.

So I take it you must have watched him a lot in high school.

He got drafted into the minors and everyone thought he would go. But deep down he really wanted to play football and ended up at Nevada.

All I know about Steele in HS is that he didn't start at QB until his Sr year and broke his leg and missed the season.

Reading Kaepernik's bio on wiki. I just find it humorous that no one seemed to pay attention to him in football. He desperately wanted to play football, so I don't buy an argument that he wasn't recruited because everyone thought he would play baseball.

A 4.0 GPA student ^[4] at John H. Pitman High School in Turlock, Kaepernick was a three-sport star who passed up a promising baseball career as a pitcher in order to play football. Kaepernick was nominated for all-state in football, basketball, and baseball in his senior year. He was the MVP of the Central California Conference in football leading his school to its first-ever playoff victory. In basketball he was a first-team all CCC selection at forward and led his 16th-ranked team to a near upset of the Number 1-ranked Oak Ridge Trojans in the opening round of playoffs. In that game Kaepernick scored 34 points, although that was not enough as Ryan Anderson scored 50 to best the Pitman Pride.^{[citation needed]}

Kaepernick achieved most of his accolades in high school as a baseball pitcher and received several scholarship offers in that sport,^[2] yet he desperately wanted to play football in college.

What is even more amusing is that Nevada didn't even attended one of his football games.

Even as a senior, he received little attention from FBS schools. Although the Wolf Pack coaching staff frequently watched video of his high school team, no one from Nevada's staff came to Turlock to see him play during his senior football season.^[3] Wolf Pack head coach, Chris Ault, decided to offer him a scholarship after one of his assistants, Barry Sacks, saw Kaepernick dominate a high school basketball game on an evening he was suffering from a fever of 102 °F (39 °C). Nevada was the only school that offered him a football scholarship, but was concerned that he would opt for baseball until he signed in February 2006.^[3]

He was basically a filler recruit for Nevada. I just think this a funny story based on how worked up people get over offers and stars for football recruits.

Agreed. It's crazy to think about his path to the Superbowl this year. I think some schools may have had reservations about how skinny he was as a Sr. Dude must have consumed a lot of protein at Nevada because he is ripped now.
