Herman was a better play caller. My only issue with Herman is they didn't stretch the field enough. Mess also has that problem but his tendencies suck as well. Epic combo. I blame CPR for some of these offensive failures too. He puts too much emphasis on completion percentage and lack of turnovers IMO. Both are important but unless you have an elite defense backing you up you need to take chances and shots down the field on offense. The occasional INT is fine because you'll make more big plays too.
Herman is talented obviously. People use the talent to work with as an excuse (yes it is easier) but he averaged 44 ppg at Rice. I kinda doubt Rice is pulling 5* kids. The teams/competition is different but come on
I hate to be the one to say it but the common thread may be the head coach. We know Rhoads can coach D, but he has yet to prove he knows anything about O. i like Rhoads but he needs to hire someone with knowledge and then let them do their thing on O.
I thought messingham did a pretty darn good job last year. We had spotty QB play-- which spells nightmares for almost any offense-- but managed a bowl game. I certainly didn't think he was perfect, but I had hopes this year would be better with the better talent.
