It's not the amount of stars for the player its the schools

I have noticed alot of threads talking about this recruit and that recruit and it seems alot of people are getting hung up on the fact that GC has not been able to bring in any 4* recruits as of yet. The ratings are subjective to many different things and some rankings may be based on others opinions rather than actually seeing or watching the player play. What is not subjective is seeing what other schools are recruiting these players.

If you look back at the past few years of recruits, many of the higher players that did come to ISU were not heavily recruited by other teams who are consistently better than ISU has been. Most of the players we did get were recruited by teams like Miami (ohio), Utah, Utah State, Minnesota, Iowa, Florida Atlantic, and UTEP to name a few, not exactly college footballs hotbeds. This year, while there may not be the high rated players according to the star rating, many of these guys have been recruited by some of the better known programs. It seems most of the players we are going after are also being recruited by OLE Miss, Missisippi State, Texas Tech, Florida, and most recurring OK. State.

Now oklahoma state may not be an elite team, but they are team that consistently goes to bowl games even though they have to play the Big 12 south teams every year. They may not be considered an elite team, but they are in the upper tier and step up from where ISU currently is. If we can start winning more of these recruiting battles then we can start to play with the big boys in the big 12 year in and year out, which hopefully leads to taking the next step.

I think if Iowa State can get its football program to a point where it is winning 7 to 8 games a year with the occasional 9 to 10 instead of winning 4 to 5 games a year with the occasional 6 to 8 win season. IF they can do that I would be happy.

I think that a lot of the stars are subjective in the 2 and 3 star guys and maybe somewhat in the 4 stars, but the 5 star guys are almost always studs. Blake Larson from Iowa is the only 5 star guy I recall that didn't pan out, and that was mostly because of injuries.

I think for ISU the main thing that has to happen is that you have to get 2 and 3 star guys that grow into player or get lucky with guys that were under rated.

I want a bowl next year! It helps with getting better players...and people notice you more around the nation....

Plus you get an extra 3-4 wks. of practice. That can really pay benefits with the younger players towards the upcoming year.

I agree with you 100% midwestcyfan. I expect ISU to make a bowl game next year. I know they are losing some key members but they have people that will be able to step up and with just overall improvement of everyone else next year will be good. There is no reason with ISU's schedule they can win 6 or 7 games and make some sort of bowl game.

Here's the thing, the star rating is true to some extent but not in all cases. ISU has uncovered some nice talent in the past that was not highly rated but look at the big time programs. They get big time players and play in meaningful bowl games and national title games for a reason and that is because they recruited better talent than everyone else. You can't look past that. Sure, we might recruit a 2 or 3 star guy that turns out to be better than one of their 4 star players but the bottom line is the schools that get the high star talent usually wind up playing in BCS bowls consistently.

I agree that stars don't mean much, but offers definately are good indicators of what kind of player you're talking about.

The bottom line is that Chizik will have to find some "diamonds in the rough" and develop them well.

I still think that this season was a near miss. Three cupcake stumbles kept ISU from bowling.

You guys are sounding like Hawk fans with this overly-optimistic projections already and excuses of why we finished 3-9. How many people here were saying we'd win 6, 7, and even a few nuts thought possibly 8 before last season? Hell even my 4 to 5 win projection was off. I think if we win even 6 games next year that is a big step in the right direction but realistically 5 is about what I expect right now. We lose a lot of key players on an already bad team and you can't expect that the new and inexperienced kids will just step in and make the difference.

I said back when we hired GC, I would hope we'd get back in the bowl picture by year 3 and I think we are on track to do that so far but next year is not going to be a bowl year even with the schedule, I just don't see how with the guys we have right now. Of course I'd be greatly pleased and surprised if we do but for those of you that have your hopes up that we are going bowling in 2008 I have a feeling by mid-season you are going to be frustrated once again.

Ummm ... hate to prove you wrong but, Mel Kiper said on Mike & Mike this morning that USC has so much talent that they would beat Ohio State or LSU! So stars (an abundance of 4 stars go there), must be the key!

They have guys in reserve roles that would probably start and play big roles on our team. Didn't they have something like 8 RB's all fighting for playing time before the season started?
