Why didn't McCarney make recruiting inroads?
After watching the recruiting wars and the recent success of both KU and MO in recruiting, I wonder why McCarney didn't get the big bounce? Both of those schools have parleyed good seasons into big gains with recruits. McCarney had his good years, chances to win the North, but what happened? Certainly a mystery to me. Any thoughts?

Re: Why didn't McCarney make recruiting inroads?
The so called "good years" were barely above avg. The one year we touched the top 10, we finished with 6 straight losses and a trip to the blue turf.
Mo and KU were legitimate top 10 teams and proved it throughout the year and in their respective MAJOR bowl game.
We have never sniffed the level they reached this year and thus were never able to parlay a successful season into a recruiting windfall.

No to mention we are the farther North of any of the Big 12 teams. Not so good for recruiting as well.

Re: Why didn't McCarney make recruiting inroads?
It should be said that Mo and Ku's "good recruits" won't be known until a couple years down the road. Their current classes could turn out to be busts.

Don't know and at this point - don't care. He's gone...we've got a new coach.
Keep things moving forward...

Keep things moving forward... Can't we move on without the D-Mac post concerning what happened? It didn't, .......................my NCC membership has tripled now that he is gone and it will go up again for '08. I've moved on.

I cant wait til the summer when theres nothing to talk about. Some people will be a lot of fun.

Re: Why didn't McCarney make recruiting inroads?
Guess I have already forgotten those years, however, did we ever go 12-1 or 12-2 under that coach like KU and Mizzo just did? I would say those records are why they got "big gains" in recruiting...

Re: Why didn't McCarney make recruiting inroads?
You can't seriously compare ISU's moderately successful seasons with Mizzou or KU, can you?
Not to mention, Lawrence and Columbia are still quite a bit closer to the talent than Ames is geographically

Re: Why didn't McCarney make recruiting inroads?
Our success in the early 2000s got us some nice players. In 2004-2005 we had some solid talent, especially on defense. Had we had a better head coach we would've had our own 10-11 win season IMO.

Re: Why didn't McCarney make recruiting inroads?
People need to lay off McCarneys recruiting. Thus far he has been ISU's finest recruiter, this includes both of Chiziks classes. I am not saying McCarney IS the better recruiter, just so far he has proven that he is the better. You can't really knock his efforts.

It's hard to recruit to Ames, Ames is an embarrassment to ISU. It's too bad they can't pick-up the campus and move it to the Des Moines area.
If ISU wasn't in Ames, you would call Ames "Marshalltown".

People are nice, as all people in IA are, and I loved my time in Ames. Someday I may move back... who knows... But I can tell you that I don't think the city hurts recruiting.

Ames is no Lawrence, Ames is no Iowa City, Ames is no Columbia, MO, BUT it could be if the powers that be would let it. Drive down Lincoln Way in 1975 and Drive down it now. NO CHANGE!!! Drive down Delaware Ave. in Ankeny during the same time period...HOLY COW, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED HERE, THIS IS NICE!!!!
I was born in Ames, grew up in Ames and had no problem with Ames until I went to these other campus'. Then this recent whole mall debacle, and trying to build a freakin' decent Fareway on the north side that took forever to pass. This list is longer, but you get the point.
Ames is so afraid of change it's scary and sad while ISU pays the price in IMHO.
