Re: Quarterback Battle??

I don't agree necessarily that it will be Arnaud. He is not a runner, more a traditional drop back passer. Bates has exceptional speed and quickness. Iowa State is not a power team. Many times its easier to cover some weaknesses in a team with a QB that is mobile. It certainly is an added diminsion. I also like what we saw of Arnaud, BUT, I'm not willing to hand the job to him. Bates has a strong arm, is big and can run. He might just take the top spot. Watching a QB rip off 20 yard runs would be fun!

Yeah, It's become pretty common for QB's to graduate early in order to be there for Spring Ball. With QB being such a complicated position it really helps to get the extra reps. If neither of them are here early I would expect them both to redshirt...

The spring game will be big for us.

I think Coach C has let it known that no position is a lock

Re: Quarterback Battle??

This year: Arnaud starts, Bates plays WR and backup QB, Tiller or Jordan RS
Next year: Arnaud starts, Bates full time WR, Tiller or Jordan Backup
2010: Arnaud Starts, Tiller or Jordan Backup
2011: Tiller or Jordan Start, other backup
2012: Same as 2011

Anyway you look at it we should be pretty well set for a number of years. Hopefully the time of freshman starting at QB are done and we can work this system over and over again by getting guys in here to redshirt, backup 1 or 2 years and then start for 2 to 3 years.

I think Phillip came to ISU only because he would get a shot at qb. I think the sring will see the same. He will be a Senaca.

Arnaud is more of a runner than Meyer was. He seems to be maybe not as fast as Meyer, but he's quicker than Meyer. Both quicker to make decisions and quicker to get up to speed once he decides to run. Sometimes Meyer sat back there forever, it seems, trying to make up his mind what to do. Often, by the time he made up his mind, it was either too late (sack or run for little gain) or he made the wrong decision (INT).

I agree, Arnaud may not have the top-end speed, but he has a shifty-ness and elusive ability about him, and is not brought down by a defender tapping him on the leg.

Bates and arnaud both only have 1 year under the system b/c the new system came when bates came so thats kind of a mute point but the playing time he got late in the season will be helpful for austen

Re: Quarterback Battle??

Been looking up stats on both Arnaud and Bates...High School stuff is really interesting.
Arnaud was the 6th rank dual threat QB in the country. Tim Tebow with #1
Bates with the 16th rank dual threat QB in the country
Bates is faster in the 40, 4.48 vs. 4.83.
Arnaud is a little taller.
Both were three stars. I suspect if either had gone to a "name" school they would have been four stars.
We have two good one's there.

Re: Quarterback Battle??

I really hope Arnaud starts next year. He shows flashes of brilliance last year, and IMO might have been better than Meyer last year, but he didnt see the field enough to really know. He's got a rocket arm and will overthrow, unelike Meyers underthrowns.
Bates is more athletic and faster, I would love to see him line up with RJ and Marquis as a starting WR. He's going to be getting equal reps this spring, so we should know who our starter will be right after the game. If they officially switch Bates to WR, im sure he'll practice all summer/fall with the WR group.

I do hope regardless that they give him some snaps during the year at QB, as long as they dont run that stupid QB keeper that netted about -8 yards per play.

Re: Quarterback Battle??

The underlying problem is this. Bates is BOUND DETERMINED to play QB in college, if he is not getting substantial time this year. We could possibly lose a key player, not only for on the field, but off. Bates hosted Tiller AND Bo Williams on visits, and the two like him. Guys like Bates are crucial for the program on and off of the field. I hope to see him get time at QB this year, he is a true competitor, Arnaud isnt going anywhere.

Re: Quarterback Battle??

As I recall, Seneca Wallace originally enrolled at Oregon State out of high school. They wanted to convert him to a DB so he left after one year. He then transferred to a JUCO to play QB and eventually signed with us. Moral of the story - some guys really want to play QB.

Then let him compete at QB. And have two QB's is important. I don't think one guy could play backup QB and another position. With injuries etc, you need two. They may both play.
