Bates may want to be QB, but like I've heard you can wish in one hand and crap in another and see which one fills up first. The job is Arnaud's to lose by injury only. Truth is he is faster and more elusive as a runner than Meyer ever was, plus has twice the arm. The only reason we didn't see more of him last year was his light injury and the staff didn't want to risk losing him for this season. He is our QB period, and he will be a great one for the future. I sincerely hope that would not cause Bates to leave because as others have said their are great opportunities that could see him in the backfield some too. But I watched Arnaud in HS and his time at ISU, he is the future and something special we need leading our team.

Cyclone
Iowa State became the Cyclones after they leveled Northwestern in 1895. As the Chicago Tribune (9/29/1895) noted:
'Struck by a Cyclone
It Comes from Iowa and Devastates Evanston Town'

I think Arnaud will be the starter, Bates will be the backup with some designed plays for him and possibly see him at wideout maybe. Tiller will be redshirted to save a year while under Arnaud and Jordan will be groomed for a different position completely possibly a DB or wideout maybe.

Does Bates just want the honest to goodness chance at the job, or is he hell bent on being the man at QB? If Arnaud comes flying out the gate and leaves no doubt that he's the starter, then what? Im rooting for both personally, and just want the guy who gives ISU the best chance at winning to play QB.

If Bates and Arnaud are two of our best guys, we need both of them playing, not just one or the other.

Mean Gene doesn't believe in locks, so officially the position is up for grabs. That being said, Arnaud got the snaps in games last year and Bates didn't, so there's got to be a reason for that. I also firmly believe Tiller and Amant, whichever ends up playing QB for us, will be redshirted this coming season to get maximum eligibility out of them. As far as I'm concerned, although Arnaud's not a lock, to me he's the easy answer.

Hate to rain on the parade here, but I think it's a wide open race. Bates was a true frosh last season. He did not have Spring drills to learn any plays. He didn't have a RS year to learn defenses. But that will be much more level this season. The ability to run from the QB spot is a HUGE weapon. That is not to say Arnaud can't. And I'm not saying Bates will win the battle. I am saying, it's wide open and don't discount this kid. He's one of the fastest players we've ever had at Iowa State. And with that speed, you want the ball in his hands.
At QB, it's in his hands every play.
What I believe will happen, is that they will both play a lot.

Its nice to have a wide open battle for QB. When is the last time we saw that at ISU? Meyer and Flynn doesnt count since the staff wanted Meyer at QB.

If Arnaud wins the battle straight up and Bates decides to transfer I certainly wouldn't hold it against him. As much as I would LOVE to see him stay and play some sort of flex position, he did come to play QB and if there isn't a spot for him then maybe it would be best for HIM to leave. I know the program would certainly miss him.
