Recruiting Weekend Weather

I may be mistaken, but it appears to me that with only three visit weekends remaining, this will be an important weekend for Chizik and Co. Not that I have any idea of all who might be visiting, but I suspect some already committed might be in town.

So when I flip to the Weather Channel, what do I find? Snow flurries in Ames with a high of 14 Friday, then highs of three degrees Saturday and Sunday. Can Chizik catch a break?!!

Yes, it's cold but I don't think weather with be the deciding factor for recruits. I do believe it plays a role. Honestly, if you have lived in southern Florida you're whole life and come to Iowa where it's -15 wind chills, you're going to get a poor impression. However, I really hope that it wouldn't be THE reason that a recruit decides not to go here. Heck, they got 3 inches of snow in northern Georgia today!

You might think that, but I was listening to a Barnstormer on Mary and Miller from TX that said that he was ready to go to Iowa State when on a recruiting visit in High School and then it snowed and was COLD and he said he wanted to visit a few more places. So, Friday night he told his dad, this is the place for me. Saturday morning woke up with snow and cold and said, um, let's keep looking.

Petty, but it can play a factor.

Re: Recruiting Weekend Weather

I liked Paul Clark's comment on KXNO this morning. (yes I am not a CR guy and I have no priviliged information) Paul said that if these guys aren't tough enough to handle a little cold weather, they probably aren't tough enough to play in the Big XII.

And as crummy as this one felt, Cyclone fans, it could be a lot worse. You could be a Hawkeye. - Sean Keeler (imagine that, actually quoting Keeler!)

I agree. I really would hope that these guys would be mature enough to choose the right place for them, regardless of weather. However, some of them are right out of high school and may not have their priorities quite in the right place.

I thought about this also. The cold certainly does not help. Does it hurt? Who knows, but I don't think it helps at all.

Hopefully the atmosphere in Hilton on Saturday will warm them up and help them forget about the cold.

Re: Recruiting Weekend Weather

I do believe that it plays a small role in the recruiting process. You would think that if they want to be good enough for the NFL they would realize that teams like New England, Green Bay, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Detroit, Seattle, Chicago, Minnesota, etc. are located in areas where it can get very cold and even snow. It's part of the game itself. However, there will still be players that would rather play where it's warm. It just doesn't mean that you can't get good players where it's cold (ie, New England, Chicago, Green Bay...).

Chizik: "One thing that I’d encourage our fans…I want them to be the loudest stadium in the Big 12. I don’t care…I want Jack Trice stadium to be the loudest in the Big 12 and I think that creates homefield advantage.... I want to stress to everyone…I want this place to be juiced up. They bought 36,000 season tickets so there is a passion there…don’t hide it…let it out. I want there to be a passion in the stadium."

Exactly. Just have to spin it. Tell a recruit they can showcase their talents in the cold.

What do Cyclone fans and Hawkeye fans have in common?
Neither one ever attended the University of Iowa.

I would guess there are hundreds of recruits every year that go to places like LSU, Texas, OU, Georgia, Auburn, etc that we would love to have and are plenty tough, but don't like cold weather.

The fact is that ISU is one of the coldest college campuses in the BCS leagues. That is a fact and it doesn't help us any. Not saying that you can't recruit well to cold places as you can point to Nebraska, Wisconsin, Michigan and others that are very simlar, but it is a factor with southern recruits.

As far as Chizik catching a break...........how is this bad luck when this is very typical January weather in central Iowa? He had to know what he was getting into when he took the job.

I think it has more to do with the quality of teams in the south over pure weather. If weather were a huge factor then teams like San Diego State, Arizona, FIU, FAU, Central Florida would be competing for national titles every year...

Plus it's not usually this cold or snowy during the season.
