Re: Who can play right away?

Sure miss the days when we didn't have a controversy about who would be kicking. It was nice to know Shaggy had that spot locked down.

IMO Gene with Take the Long View

Unless a kid can start or be a special teams stud, I don't think many kids will hit the field this spring. If I were to project I'd say:

1) Carlson @ WR
2) Tiller @ QB. If Tiller beats out Bates- I can see him getting some PT.
3) L. Johnson or Benton. I think 1 plays and one RS. With Singleton & Bell returning, I don't think both will get big time PT.
4) Guyer & Mahoney. No reason to RS a kicker, especially since we brought in 2 with the same class.

A lot of people have mentioned Cedrick Johnson as a kid who plays- with Hamilton, Sumrall, Mesiah & Carlson we have some pretty good depth at WR. If Johnson doesn't RS, he's a stud from day 1.

The other key is special teams- our coverage was pretty bad last year and we didn't have a punt returner. A couple DB or WR recruits could play right away if they can shore up special teams.

Re: Who can play right away?

I can't remember the guys name now and couldn't find it but there was an article on CR about a long snapper that was going to walk on next year. I doubt he gets the start in place of the guys we already have on the team unless he's really good.

I'm surprised GC went after kickers, especially since we have two on the squad already(a RS Jr and a RS Fr). I'm expecting to have one of the new Kickers to RS, there is no need to have 3 Kickers in the same eligibility class. I'd expect one of the returning kickers to get looked at first before giving the job to one of the true freshman.

Personally, I like the fact that someone has to earn their way onto the team. Competition breads improvement.

Recruit

Re: Who can play right away?

Would someone "in the know" give me an idea of how certain we are that all/most of our recruits will arrive on campus this fall? I understand that certain things can happen, but wondering if we have any recruits that may come down to the wire like Tuba a couple years ago in terms of qualifying. I realize that Tuba was a juco, but still wondering about our high school recruits. Thank you

I have fought the good fight. I have completed the race. I have kept the faith.

Yeah, but it's better not to sound like an Iowa grad.

Let's see who qualifies first. Haughton or Harper (tight end?) might play as true frosh--if they're on campus.

I would expect Benton to play, and maybe LJ--after all, Ellis saw a little PT as a true frosh switching from offense.

And I'm thinking there's a reason the staff so wanted to keep Ruempolhamer and Laing under wraps. However, both are likely fairly green.

Mahoski hasn't been the same since his knee injury, right after he signed. As for the redshirt frosh, I'm not certain which of the walkon freshman kickers you're referring to.

I have a suspicion that Guyer and Mahoney will be competing week to week as the season progresses.

Re: Who can play right away?

Im not for sure if he is still planning on walking on but Alex Hanson from ankeny is thinking about it. He signed with Kansas as a kicker and redshirted his first year but didnt like it. He took a year off and will be enrolling in Iowa State this fall. As far as him walking on he said he was still considering it.

the RSFr i was referring to was Grady Derheim out of Minnesota. it doesnt seem smart to have 3 kickers in the same eligibility class

Carlson has lights out speed, so he will probably get lots of PT. Otherwise he wouldn't have been recruited from Juco

To my knowledge Derheim isn't on scholarship- so it doesn't seem to matter what class he is in. If he can beat out Mahoney & Guyer- awesome. However, if he couldn't beat out Shaggy this year (at least be a designated kickoff guy), I'm not holding my breath that he we ever be a player.

The fact that Chizek gave scholaships to 2 HS kickers in the same class, seems to indicate that nobody on the current roster was a Big 12 caliber kicker.

It's Chizik. There's no "e" in it. It's bad enough when squawks get it wrong, could you please work on getting our head coach's name spelled right? Please?!?

Back to topic. I'd like to see some crazy, "Vince Papale-esque" players with speed get on our special teams unit as freshmen. Then Coach Chizik can develop them into Big XII-level starters at a later date.

Obviously if our kickers couldn't beat out Shaggy, there is a serious need to upgrade at the position.
