Why stars don't mean anything

So, yesterday before the battle heated up, Sedrick Johnson was a 4 star recruit, 6-4/180, and I thought I remember his posted speed was 4.46.

Today, after the battle is over, he is a 3-star recruit, 6-3.5, 196 and his speed is listed at 4.6.

Poor kid, just because he choose the "lowly" cyclones, he is shorter, slower, and has lost a star. If I were him, I would put this up in my locker and use every day to prove that he is worth the 4-stars that they originally gave him.

PS: I found older article that claimed a 4.6 speed so that may be inaccurate. However, every article until today had him as a 4-star recruit.

At thies point it doesnt matter. He is now a Clone and what matters is what he does on the field. Stars, class ranking I have heard enough of that, we will see how this class works out in 2 to 4 years. You can put all kinds of stars behind a guys name but unless he has coaching and motivation it really doesnt matter. Sometimes 3 star kids are better, they have had to work at least a little to get where they are, and know they have to work hard to get better.

No doubt, but it just shines a little light on what the stars mean. I fully agree that it isn't the number of stars that a kid has but their work ethic and on field attitude. Even so, it is still a lot easier to get excited about more stars than less.

Again, just goes to show how much credibility the ratings of the experts really means.

Stars do mean something, but not with individual players. It is a good way to distinguish the best classes, but there will still be some surprises.

Pretty sure he's still a 4-star. Unless CR is simply ******* with us.

He was always a 3 star on Scout and a 4 star on Rivals. None of the measurements are official so they may vary by source.

He looks like a great person to me. Hard worker. Ennis comes to mind. If may play harder than a five star.

Actually, I was looking at Scout which had him as a 4 star before he signed with Iowa State.

As Jon Miller said yesterday, they are listed 4/5 stars when the are a commit for Notre Dame or Alabama, but if they are an ISU/Iowa commit they are a 3 star player at best. I have a great feeling about this recruiting class-lots of speed.

You're definitely wrong on this. I remember looking at his profiles on both Scout and Rivals, and one had him as a 3-star and the other as a 4-star WR.

I was reading about how they judge four stars and three stars and they said most of the 3 stars could be four stars and the two stars could be three stars. They just cannot have over half the class being 4 star recruits. They are kind of grading these rankings on a curve. 10- five star players, 50-four star players, and so on.

I also read how to build a national championship with 3-star players and Jerimiah Schwarts was on that list at full back. He is only listed at a 2-star on some sites and a 3 on others. So i totally agree with you that stars dont mean everything.

NFL teams spend millions of dollars evaluating talent and they still get stuck with lame draft picks who don't pan out. Most probably don't as a matter of fact. It would be interesting to see how 1st rounders have turned out through their career. You get stars for being big and/or fast and that's about it. In the college game you certainly can win games if you accumulate plenty of these players, but it doesn't mean the 2-3 stars can't turn out to be better football players than the raw athletes. From what I saw last year, I'm confident our staff can "coach them up".
