I assume you mean the hawk fan who drives by JTS every time he's in Des Moines? And didn't know who Jack Trice was, just assumed he was an announcer or something? What a maroon. (no, I'm not saying anything negative about Dowling, I'm just being ironical)

Although, the announcer thing got me thinking... how great would 'Pete Taylor court at Hilton Coliseum' or 'Pete Taylor field at Jack Trice Stadium' be? I'm leaning towards Hilton, but not sure why... I guess I think it would be better to leave football to Jack, and Jack alone.

This is the sarcasm pirate. If you see him anywhere in my post, it means I was being sarcastic. Thank you. Actually there's a good chance I'm being sarcastic even if I forgot the pirate. I'm not to be taken too seriously.

Johnny Orr Floor at Hilton Coliseum

Pete Taylor Press Box at Jack Trice Stadium

Some People see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say why not? When I took this job I said why not Iowa State? Why not winning? Why not bowl games? Why not sell outs? Why not national respect? Why not us? Why not here? Why not the cyclone family?

"When Euseph Messiah arrived at Iowa State, he barely noticed a weather-beaten statue outside of his team's home stadium, much less cared whom the facility was named after."

Maybe the football team needs a little lesson during fall practice. This is a great part of our history and tradition that should be enhanced and built upon.

Very cool to see the graphic used on the front page of the College football section.

Re: Great ESPN Article On ISU and Jack Trice

I've always thought the story of Jack Trice would make a great movie. It would probably fall along the lines of Remember the Titans with the race issue involved, and I don't think that's a bad thing. It would be a great story for Disney to pick up on.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

Our players already walk past the statue. I would think that just like the Army players touch the "Give me a West Point Football Player" plaque, or the Notre Dame players hit that metal "Win one for the Gipper" sign, it would be cool if our players had a ritual "something" they did before the game involving the statue.

I ALWAYS go over to it, and make sure I touch it before a game.

Just make sure you don't treat it like the Bobby Bowden statue in the Allstate commercial...

The ISU of Trice's era was one of the more enlightened universities of its age. George Washington Carver had served as a faculty member before moving to Tuskegee Institute.
Now THATS a huge story, as well. Our beloved Iowa State University is a special place. Don't forget that.

I think you mean the sign that says "Play Like a Champion Today". Anyway, the statue would have to be moved for it to be involved with the players taking the field in any way. They could put it inside the Jake and have the players touch it on the way by, then show that on the big screen at the same time. That would mean that the public wouldn't ever have access to it.

Maybe they could do something on their way into the Jake from the team buses. I'm not sure there's really a good way to incorporate the statue into any sort of pregame ritual for the players. Any suggestions?

Re: Great ESPN Article On ISU and Jack Trice

It is a great story and one that I have always been interested in.
In fact, I gave a speech in the spring semester of 07 about how the stadium name should indeed be switched to Jack Trice Stadium. That next fall, it was. Not saying that I had anything to do with it, but it was the only speech I got an A on and my teacher absolutely loved it.
