Re: Great ESPN Article On ISU and Jack Trice

I met your dad at Principal Financial Group in downtown DSM last February - he was a really nice guy and signed a book for me. In honor of Black History Month, there were several Principal employees that performed a dramatic reading of the Jack Trice story based on your dad's book and it was really cool to see. One of my friends read the part of Jack.

LET'S GO STATE!!!

Re: Great ESPN Article On ISU and Jack Trice

From the time the new stadium was built until it was renamed, there was a gradual decline in the results of the football team - a "Cyclone Stadium curse" many called it. Then, with the new name, we defeated the darkside, reversed the decline, and not much later became bowl eligible.

I remember him mentioning that! It sounds like a pretty neat idea.

And ISU has Simon Estes right on campus. Seems like a perfect fit for a dramatic voice-over.

My dad talked to the whole Insight.com bowl team during preseason about Jack Trice and that year they go 9-3 and beat a good Pitt. team. Maybe he'll do that again next year.

It would be cool if we had a sign that said "Beware of Mass Interference" from Trice's letter. Maybe put it on a plaque right in front of the band and have the players touch it as they run out onto the field.

Some People see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say why not? When I took this job I said why not Iowa State? Why not winning? Why not bowl games? Why not sell outs? Why not national respect? Why not us? Why not here? Why not the cyclone family?

How about "Everyone is expecting me to do big things. I will." Falls along the same lines as "play like a champion today." I have always thought that Jack's quote should be in bold letters somewhere visable inside the stadium. I love that quote!

I do think we should have a pregame ritual with the statue or something along those lines. Just that speculating here won't do much about it, gotta find a way to get in touch with people in the athletic department.

that would be sweet.. put it on a plaque for the guys to look at while they are walking out and then have it somwhere in the stadium

Iowa State: Anyone who's a true college basketball fan needs to see a game at Hilton Coliseum. Nice is in the DNA of Iowans and the fans here are particularly gracious -- even when the home team loses but gives a great effort, they are appreciative.

ESPN.com picked Hilton Coliseum as the "Hot Arena" in the Big 12...coaches in the league noted that, "regardless of talent, the Cyclones have a home court like no other."

They could make it part of the video introduction as the team comes out. Sure, the Cyclone tearing up the Big XII is fun and all. But they could start with like a rotating shot around the statue, with a musical intro behind it, as the words "Everyone is expecting me to do big things" runs across the screen. Then, pause, fade to black, "I WILL" splashes, music explodes, people go crazy, team comes running out, we beat some ***, everyone goes home happy.

We actually already had something like this. I think it was Mac's last year, or the year before that they erected the "Honor Before Victory" pillar which stands just to the left of where the players used to enter the field. When they ran out, they all used to give the plaque a slap. Then, when we got the "bouncehouse helmet,"
they moved the player entrance to the lower level exit of the Jacobsen building. So now, they only pass it when they exit the field and when they come back from half.

I remember running over to get a picture with it when we all rushed the field after Mac's last win.

Unfortunately, it looks like this tradition never kept its traction once GC took over.

If I remember right, wasn't that the whole pre-season hype video for the basketball team in 2006/2007? I remember seeing the promos run at the football games. It featured the whole team reading Trice's letter. And I think the BB poster even said "I WILL" on it. I might be wrong about that.

I don't remember the promos, but I do remember the poster. My buddies and I had the "I WILL" poster with Will Blalock on it. We used to joke that we should have gotten the "I RAHSHON" poster with Clark's mug on it. Sadly I don't think they had any.

I think it was 05/06 because it was the year after the NCAA Second Round appearance. Everybody was back except Homan and we thought we could do it again. Unfortunately, the rest is history...
