Re: The Shape of Things to Come
[quote=Aclone;397628]I have been thinking about this for a while, and with a thread about whether we have the money to horseshoe the South End Zone, thought that I'd take a look at the State of the Program, and just how fast Gene Chizik is making it well. Of course, this is premature, because we'll find out a great deal more even in Spring Practice, but with a few minutes, why the heck not?
My first comment is one that some people simply aren't going to like. Say what you want about Dan McCarney, but he was fired, really, for two flaws in his program, and those two reasons only. Had he remedied either of these several years ago, he would still be our coach--and people would be happy with him. quote]
Dude, Dan McCarney was fired for 1 reason...he didn't win enough games. Especially against over .500 teams. I would even go so far as to say the only reason he was kept so long is that he pretty consistently beat Iowa. If you consider the fact that during his tenure the big12 north was as bad as it ever has been and there are more bowl games than ever (and we still haven't played in a "good" one) he could have been disposed of sooner except that where the program had came from was absolutely soooo horrible that even this was enough.

So, winning 6 Super Bowls is enough for a while, but not enough to really build on. Makes sense to me. You covered that with the sub-500 teams, mediocre schedule (at least one week a year). Of course, it makes sense to me because I'm not a Hawkeye.
If you type it slower, they might understand, too. -

And Chizik looks to be ensuring that he has a good line and kicking game.

And Chizik looks to be ensuring that he has a good line and kicking game. So then McCarney was fired because he didn't know what he needed or what to recruit to win more games. I concede the point.

Re: The Shape of Things to Come
McCarney was fired because his two main coordinators were horrible. They were predictable and by the end of the season not only our players but the other team's players knew what we were going to do. The UConn players said as much after that debacle I think Mac could recruit he just wasnt much of a game coach and neither were his lead assistants. He couldnt adjust at half time or made bad adjustments for his entire career. I can count on one hand his comebacks but cant even imagine how many blown leads he had. Add the fact they couldnt adjust to a new quarteback, again and again and agian and he was doomed. Keep Loney at ISU and Mac is still there.
