    Is ISU a stepping stone?

I was just thinking about this. If Gene has huge success here and lets say takes us to a BCS game and leads us to a couple of bowl wins. Does he use ISU as a stepping stone for bigger and better things? Lets be honest, we are currently not a top tier program. We may not even be a middle tier program. Gene will be highly sought for if he turns our program around.

I think you could say this for most universities. There are a few jobs out there that are highly touted, but coaches who have an attachment to their school may not want it. Unfortunately, I can't see Chizik staying here if something bigger and better comes along simply because he has no real attachments to Iowa State University. Hopefully he'll have a lot of pride in a program he built from the ground up when all is said and done and want to stick around, but I'm not counting on it.

It's possible Gene doesn't have an answer to this question, that in his heart he doesn't know how he will react to success here.

How entrenched and attached to ISU will he have become by the time he succeeds big-time here? Maybe he'll want to move on. But, just maybe, he'll want to nurture the program that he built.

Although, coaches do move. Urban Meyer to UF, Rodriguez (sp.) to Michigan. . . . Guess if I had to bet, Gene would move, but it would have to be a great opportunity.

Re: Is ISU a stepping stone?

Lets just say that if he gets us to those levels, 1) yes, he'll probably get the chance to take over a major program that needs a rejuvenation and will take it; and 2) We'll have several big name choices between proven veteran coaches and up coming hot shots at smaller schools to carry on our success.
IF we get to those levels, we'll be in a fine situation no matter what happens!!!

Well Pollard has said he hopes he's a hot commodity some day because that means he did some good things here and when that time comes we'll fight like hell to keep him. Right now I'm not worried about it cuz we have a long ways to go to get to that point.

It'll have to be the right fit, but if a big boy comes calling, I wouldn't expect him to stay (unfortunately).

I wouldn't hold it against him either. Hopefully, since he has young kids, he wants to stay at ISU and in Iowa as badly as we want him to stay. I think he'd have to give us about 10yrs before both his kids would be out of school.

who cares? if he gets us there and leaves, i trust jp to hire another guy to not let it fall back to where it is now. i'd rather have someone to get us where we all want to be and leave then never get there at all.

Throw a ton of money at him but don't let him pull a Ferentz. If Iowa can dish out a ton of money for a football coach, ISU should follow suit if need be in the future. If he proves he's a great coach, pay him! I think that's something Pollard would definitely do also. Give him a base salary, and give him a ton of incentives to keep the program getting better and better.

Re: Is ISU a stepping stone?

I'd say it depends on whether we get gradually better every year or have a breakout year. If we go 4-8 next season, then 11-2 the year after, I'd say he might go. But if we go 6-6, 7-5, 9-3, and so on, I'd say he stays.
EXAMPLE: Kirk Ferentz at Iowa could have been a Head Coach in the NFL but now he's stuck at a struggling Iowa team. Big mistake.

I guess we're jumping to conclusions that Pollard will be around too. If he proves himself here, you might see him move on as well.

Thats exactly how I feel about this. If he leaves it obviously means he did some good here.

I'm more concerned about JP staying long-term. With him at the helm we won't have reason to worry if/when we have to replace coaches.
