Wow, what a miss! If only people could see into the future. But then again, maybe it wouldn't have turned out any differently...

So we got Cooper to thank for suggesting ISU to hire Jim Walden. Would have been interesting to see what Cooper could have done here.

The list of Big Name coaches that have passed through ISU without returning to be a head coach is lengthy. Yet another name and yet another miss.

Re: John Cooper article

So John Cooper is still pissed that he wasn't hired to succeed Earle? That's what, almost 30 years ago???? And if he had been hired, and won some, how long would he have stayed here? Please, John, let it go...

He's not still mad that he didn't get the job, he's mad at the way it was handled.

The Rag actually had an article Sunday on this too: Iowa State football: Cooper bittersweet about Cyclones | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register Didn't even know about this till my dad (an Ohio State alum) mentioned something to me about it yesterday.

Cooper never actually coached at ISU. He wanted to.

The difference is that John is an Alum. He just may have stayed had we hired him.

So true!

I do remember when Mac got that first extension, rumors were swirling that he wouldn't be retained and Cooper was in. It was right after tOSU released him, and IRRC, it was before Gene Smith took off (funny how he eventually ended up at tOSU, too - Earle Bruce, John Cooper, Gene Smith... They owe us!)

Re: John Cooper article

We blew it big time back in those days - Cooper and Gable for example. I have a special place for anyone who was on the "Dirty 30". Those guys were really special. I remember seeing many of them play both ways against an Oklahoma team that platooned on every series.

John Cooper attempted to get hired as head coach several times at ISU, and believe me, he would've stayed if he could've gotten hired.

This is not new news.
