I watched a bunch of the Cyclone replays on Mediacom the other day. We really weren't far from a 6-6 record. My observations.
Against Kent State and UNI. Punt returns. UGLY. Fumbles led to lost possession and easy scores. One time the defense made a great stand and takeaway. But it had to be depressing to hold the opponent and then turn the ball over with a 40 yard change of field position. Meyer did NOT play well these first two games. Poor fakes and poor passes. A couple errant shotgun snaps that he wasn't able to cover and it spelled disaster.
Toledo. Complete breakdown on kick return coverage. That return by Parmele was absolutely the WORST tackling I have ever seen. And our kickoffs were TERRIBLE. NO distance and NO coverage. Meyer's play was slightly better. But still missed lots of passes badly. He was still locked on one receiver and continued a bad tendency to roll right into pressure rather than step up or away from pressure. Blocked field goal lost it.
Those three games were certainly winnable. Bad special teams play. Poor quarterback play. Those were the big things in those games that stood out.
When we played Kansas, the quarterbacking by Reising was awesome. Great fakes, quick pitches, and bullet passes.
We could have easily been 6-6.

To play the devil's advocate, we could have just as easily have been 1-11. If Shaggy does not have the game of his career, and Bates catch that bomb, we lose to Iowa. If the Colorado kicking game got their kick off in time, it counts and we lose. Heck, we barely hung on to beat K-State.
Lets face it, the 2007 football was terrible in about every sense.

2007 team>>>>2006 team
Last year was miserable the first half of the season but we ended up looking like a real football team there late. The first 3 games of 08 will be very telling to me how our season will go. I haven't been this excited for a football season since 2005. :)

Nothing is ever as good as we think...or as bad as we think. Thankfully, everyday the calendar moves forward not back. So, we can always look forward to what comes next. Ultimately, 2007 is not the whole story...just one step on the journey.

Lets face it, the 2007 football was terrible in about every sense. First, we dominated Iowa and should have won handily. Secondly, Colorado choked and deserved to lose that game to us. We dominated them the second half. Third, K-State was terrible at Jack Trice and we deserved to win that game.
I thought we should have been 5-7. UNI was winnable, but I give them credit; they just outplayed us. Toledo was a choke-job on our part, and Kent State played the best game of their season the first game of the season...against us!

Sandvig had how many fumbles in those first two games? Lost field position, lost possessions. Meyer threw a bunch of interceptions and made some horrendous plays as well. He really played poorly those first few games. When you watch it for the second and third time you realize just how bad it was.

I think Earle Bruce had only three wins in his first three seasons but he was building a real program; a program that was the last ISU team to beat Nebraska in Lincoln. That's what Gene is doing; building a real program.

The cupboard was full. And then Woody Hayes decided to punch a Clemson football player who had made an interception against his Ohio State Buckeyes. And that changed Iowa State's football history.

I can't believe the random idiots we had as AD's turned down John Cooper twice to be our coach.

Pardon my error, four wins.
Hopefully Gene can mimic Earle's success and we can keep him!

Hopefully Gene can mimic Earle's success and we can keep him! No biggie. I just happened to be a student back then at ISU. Those were some great times. Earle had it going at ISU and then we hired Duncan. IF, if, if, if, if we had only hired Cooper instead. Duncan was a terrible coach.
