Re: ISU ushers in new era at receiver - Ames Trib Article

Here's an interesting question I'd like to hear people's opinion's on. Would a team be better with a receiving corp full of Blythes or Hamiltons?

I don't think I'm alone when I say I'd like to see more and more planets fall under the ruthless domination of our solar system.

Also there are only a few people out there that max out their potential and that is what makes them Jerry Rice, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird.
Marquis Hamilton and Todd Blythe much, much closer in talent level than Moss and Jurivicous.

Do you think Fred Hoiberg maxed out his potential at ISU? I think Blythe could have been that kind of legend at ISU, but he wasn't because he didn't bring it every play.

The bottom line is you are valuing being great at one part of the game, while I value the overall game more. Neither one of us is right really, it's just a difference of opinion.

Re: ISU ushers in new era at receiver - Ames Trib Article

IMO, the reason why I like Hamilton is that I think he is making a positive impact on the play, every play he is out there. If it's a running play, he's blocking hard. If it's a passing play that isn't going to him he's going all out. He can catch screens well. He can go over the middle. And although we haven't seen it much, he can go deep.

I loved Todd. I think his records really are a reflection of the talent he had as a receiver at ISU. I just like the way Hamilton makes winning plays every play. Maybe I shouldn't have said he is better than Blythe, because they are such different players it's tough to compare them.

People have compared Blythe to Moss, and I can see that a bit. I guess Hamilton reminds me of Hines Ward, who is a guy that may not have all the physical tools of the elite WR's, but he gets it done with grit and makes things happen every play. A more accurate statement on my part is that I love watching Hamilton play - the guy is active out there in so many ways.

In one of Chizik's pre-game interviews this fall he stated that an area where we really need improvement is yards after catch by our receivers. Seemed like every time we caught a pass, the receiver was tackled right on the spot by the first defender to get there. We need somebody who can break a tackle or run away from the defense after catching the ball.

Hate to bring this thread up again.

I see what you are saying with this. Blythe could have been a legend. To some he may be already. The question is, is he not a legend b/c he didn't block the greatest 100% of the time, or b/c he didn't have a QB who could get him the ball down field, where he thrived? Not to knock Meyer, but his strong suit was not the deep pass. Sadly the deep pass was Blythe's strong suit. They were never really a good match

How can you say Hamilton is better than Blythe when he hasn't done anything to prove that? Blythe holds all the records at ISU, even though he had a subpar QB, went through a coaching change, tore an ACL, and had teams double teaming him on every play. Until Quis proves himself by putting up numbers like Todd's there is no way you can honestly say he is better than him. Give Todd his credit.
