I wish we could just get an awesome offensive line and run the ball down people's throats. That is the best thing for a QB.

I'll be the first to second that HS - as far as QB sitch is concerned, my guess is as good as anys right now as to who is gonna be the starter. but I do think it would be very cool to have a qb turned successful WR (austin flynn) and a wr/db turned successful QB (phillip bates.) But damn, it is great to have a GOOD qb contro at I-State. Can't wait to see what the step-up guy will do this fall.

AA had two interceptions, but I believe both were on tipped balls.

I actually don't think either looked real crisp in the passing game on all routes, short, intermediate, and long (minus the couple that went for scores). That being said, they really tightened down their play to a good level as the game went on. I suppose chalk me up to cautiously optimistic as it took the offenses a long time to get into any kind of flow and that was by the time the 2nd and 3rd stringers were running.
It is really hard to get anything out of these scrimmages. About the only thing I took away from it is that we are going to be running a lot of no huddle and we are going to mix in some zone read this season.

I agree with your comments...and don't be surprised to see a lot more spread offense after the frosh receivers arrive. I see SJ as a key component assuming he makes it here. The other thing that was encouraging is we are coaching the finer points of blocking and tackling etc. Last year was a stretch for the coaches to just figure out who will play where and put in O and D. We should be better this year.

Bates or Arnaud. I would take either or both over Meyer. One big thing about Bates is that he is a threat to take it to the house on a run. We will need BOTH quarterbacks to play well this fall. And I expect both to get significant playing time.

AA didn't look sharp, but he did look good last season and I will chalk yesterday up to a bad day. It also be nice if the WR's got some seperation adn caught the ball.

Given how well Austen played last yaer, he certainly has the stuff to make things happen in game situations.
My wife and I were heading to a funeral yesterday, so we had to listen on the radio. Sounded like neither guy was real impressive, but the D played well, which surprised John and Eric.
It's a spring game. Take it for what it's worth. Problem is, we don't know what it's worth yet.

I'm not worried about Arnaud, in fact it was very hard to take anything away from the passing game after what we saw. Not a whole lot of caught passes and it wasn't in a true game situation. Plus we still have some guys coming in this fall that will change up some of our 2 deeps which could have a trickle down effect on how some aspects of our game looks.

AA will be fine.
Having said that , I was quite surprised at how even the QB situation appears to be. Bates really has a legitimate chance at this thing based on what I saw yesterday.
Additionally, O-Line was not good yesterday OR perhaps our D-Line was that good yesterday....hard to tell.

Chizik has mentioned that learning the play book has been holding Bates back somewhat. By fall practice, that may be more of a level playing field. It will be very interesting to see who comes out number #1 by the first game. Chizik has also noted he wants more big plays out of the offense. I think Bates has more potential for that due to his running ability. He may ultimately end up with more playing time once he's comfortable with the playbook.

Bates should stick with number 8. B8s works much better than B7s.
Actually that's how I kept track of who was on the field yesterday, since I hadn't committed either number to memory yet.
