Less "glamour" surrounding the spring game?

I really feel there wasn't the pizazz around this year's spring game as there has been in the past...and I like it. Usually the message boards are full of football chatter following the week of the spring game. For the most part, it's died out already and we're not even into Monday afternoon.

The previous staff really treated this as a game and while that wasn't bad - I really enjoy the new format. Not pitting the first team against the second team basically - but instead offense vs. defense - giving a "truer" picture of what things look like.

One result of that is there is not the hype surrounding it. Not a ton of big plays or guys that look fantastic. The goal of spring practice isn't to see how many TDs a guy can score - but how he can improve upon himself and how the team can get better.

Doesn't give the media and fans as much to chatter about - but I'm ok with that. Again, spring practice isn't for us - it's for the team. And I think what Chizik and Co. are doing with the spring practices and spring game - will greatly benefit us this fall.

I am with you, its a spring game which should be nothing more then an open practice for the fans. Bottom line lets just start winning games in the fall!!!!

If anyone is short on hype, come to Omaha. I bet last saturdays game will still be all that I hear about all this week...

I really like the format. Getting to see some regular drills in action was very interesting (to me, at least - although it seemed like when the first "scrimmage" portion ended, at least 1/3 of the crowd left...)

More spring news, Chris Brown tore his acl during spring ball, that is why he didn't participate in the spring game. Big loss, hopefully either Steve Johnson, Brandon Hunley, or Kennard Banks can step up.

Whoa...I had not heard that. What's his expected recovery time?

I think more and more schools are doing this. It's not often that a player goes down with an injury in a spring game, but it happens often enough that teams need to be cautious. No need to get injured this early in the year.

ISU Student - Iowa fan. Best of both worlds.

No, you could see him on the sidelines in sweats.

I don't know, I asked my friend on the team why he wasnt playing and thats what he said. Blythe tore his ACL in spring and came back ready for the start of the season but who knows. Its a big hit as Brown had become one of my favorite players. At least we've got some experience behind him with Johnson and Hunley but it will definitely be a big hit, especially in run support if he can't recover in time.

It's nice to read something like this because I can't tell you the number of times people around me and my friends were complaining because it was "boring" and "uneventful" to name a few.

The Pride of Iowa State...

I was thoroughly impressed of how organized the pracitce was. There was minimal down time. The coaching staff definitely maximizes the amount of time they are allotted.

They have to be like that. The practices under the previous staff were the same way.

Each practice is divided up into segments, some longer than the other. I the Bergstrom facility, there is a clock that counts down each segment. When a buzzer goes off, the players all "scurry" from one location to the other, hinging on what exactly they'll be doing in the next segment.

Highly organized would be an understatement in describing how the practices are organized and ran.

I didn't understand the scoring at all. Usually the PA announces the format but nothing this time.

The scoring format is very fluid, and changes whenever Gene wants it to.
