we ran all scrimmage long, but how often will we use it next year? It seems like a lot of teams are using it in their scrimmages, maybe its so not as much time is wasted on the field getting plays in and out.

It would be nice to use it more than the last minutes of the halves. It can really throw defenses off when they cant sub players in or out, especially if we can switch up our play calling at the same time.

Also noticed that A. Sandvig and 2 of the coaches were calling in the plays to the offense. Were they calling plays for their respective groups, ie OL, WR, RB? Or were they decoys?

I think no huddle can be very 'uncomfortable' for a defense. I hope they run it when needed. Sometimes you want to take some time. Although opening drives, towards the end of halves, scratching for momentum moments are perfect.

I would think that they would have at least one doing formation, one doing the route/pattern, and the last being either a decoy or the "when QB looks over this is the real route and the first is nullified" guy

It doesn't allow the defense much time to make as many substitutions depending on the situation, or to make adjustments.

Considering this defense has seen the same signals being called for 15 practices, I would be upset if they didn't know what was coming. Other teams will have 4 or 5 practices before seeing us, not 15. Well SDSU may spend 15 days prepping for us, but other than the first game most teams won't be looking past their opponents to see us.

Using the spring game to judge the usefulness of our no-huddle offense is nearly pointless.

We will probably use it when it makes sense during the season.

I wouldn't read too much into the spring game; a lot of the plays were probably scripted in advance instead of being called from the sideline or in the huddle.

On top of not allowing for subs, I like that the coaches up in the box are making the final play calls based on the match-ups they see from up there, rather than the quarterback. I think it gets us out of bad plays, and sets up bigger plays more often.

I can tell you the no huddle was ran exclusively during a scrimmage practice held the first Saturday in April.

So I'd guess if we spent at least 2 scrimmages on it and obviously even more time to learn and practice it (because I felt it was executed well in both scrimmages) - we'll be using it a lot this fall.

If anyone here has watched CIML football, I believe that when we run the no-huddle it will be a lot like Johnston's offense. My brother was a senior this year and told me that McFarland spent a couple of days watching them practice. This may have been just to watch Guyer kick, but my brother swears he was scouting their offense.

and I don't care how much they score as long as it it more than the other team. I'll be perfectly happy winning every game 7-3.

I also read (DMReg, I think) that the NCAA was considering a change to the play clock. 40 or 45 seconds from when the last play stopped instead of 25 seconds from when the ball is placed. Running a no-huddle could be useful in situations where the pile takes time to sort out.

That would be awesome and it would really speed up the game.

Another reason teams are going to the no huddle is that if used effectively it should allow for more offensive plays per game. More offensive plays = more scoring opportunities.
