Give Chizik credit for self-improvement

One of the things I'm most impressed with about Coach Chizik was the fact he brought in coaches from across the country to assess the entire Iowa State football program. Offense, defense etc, all were objectively looked at. He is not saying who there were, for obvious reasons, but you can bet from SEC, Pac 10 and conferences that we don't compete with. He said changes were made based on the recommendations. I really give him credit. Many coaches have too big of an ego to want advice, or think they know it all. Chizik is smart enough to know he can learn from others.
Thoughts on this?

He also sent out OUR coaches to observe, take notes, and get advice from other schools.

Isn't this something that commonly takes place? I've never heard of it 'til now, but I don't see why this wouldn't be done more often...

I think coaches commonly talk to eachother about this sort of thing. I don't think this is a new concept. I don't know which coaches do or don't, but I bet it's not uncommon.

One of ESPN's spring football articles discussed how Pinkel spent a few years learning the spread and bringing in coaches from around the country to improve on it. He credits that to their success at Mizzou last year.

Last year Nebraska had a gaggle in to watch one of their practices. It is probably something the big boy programs do.

This is one of the benefits of having a coach like Chizik that has coaching "friends" in many different conferences around the country. They usually help each other out...as long as they are not in direct competition.

Re: Give Chizik credit for self-improvement

I agree that it is good for Chizik to get outside advise on what they think about our program and how to take it to the next level. Especially since he is such a young coach. P.S. Somtimes there is way too much internet lingo on this site. I swear I have to look up one a day.

Re: Give Chizik credit for self-improvement

I think about 95 percent of coaches in any sport are happy to share what they know with others for the benefit of their sport, and the best ones never stop learning from others.

McCarney did the same thing

and it's actually pretty common. I know that McCarney had his coaches go look at Arizona's defense when they were really good.
