I was hoping we could sneak this kid to ISU. Looks like a great prospect.

Sorry if this has been posted.

Re: Barrent commits to Iowa

I had high hopes of getting a commitment from Barrent or having him go out of state. I am not real suprised because he loved the Hawkeyes but I am definitely dissapointed!

Re: Barrent commits to Iowa

I am hopeful that Chizik can recruit well in-state, and by "well" I mean getting players who are also offered by Iowa and other programs.
What's bothersome is the attendance at Chizik's two spring Coaches Clinics so far; they were both well below that of what McCarney used to attract.

Re: Barrent commits to Iowa

I read in the paper today that Barrent's three top choices were Iowa, Illinois and Michigan State. I'm surprised ISU wasn't in there, considering he wants to major in engineering. Was also surprised to hear him say how impressed he was by Iowa's engineering program. I didn't know they had one.

Can't really blame him for his decision though. He made a comment about Ferentz's strong ties to the NFL and Iowa's history of sending O-lineman to the next level, and how his goal is to play pro ball. Best of luck to the kid, I guess.

There is no comparison between ISU's and Iowa's engineering programs. This recruit was obviously brainwashed since birth.

Re: Barrent commits to Iowa

Was hoping Chizik would reverse this trend. Hope we can get at least one or two Iowa kids that EIU is also after. It really concerns me that the camp attendance is down. Is this from last year, or is it for this year? Have there been any camps yet this year? If not, anyone know when they are scheduled?

Re: Barrent commits to Iowa

Rivals had a pic of him wearing a Hawgeye tshirt while on a visit to Kinnick on gameday. And the Rag said his final 3 were Lil 11 teams, so loks like we had no chance what so ever, seems to be he's one of the few fans of the big 10 network.

He also will probably start as a true frosh. Cant wait to see McDonough tear him up!

EIU has a biomed. engineering program. ISU does not. Aside from that, ISU is accepted as being the better engineering university, but EIU does have some decent faculty/engineering programs.

And if he was seriously considering Illinois or MSU, neither ISU's or UI's engineering programs can hold a tee to either of them. I don't really think engineering was all that huge a deal to him

Re: Barrent commits to Iowa

d30fan - I was referring to the annual spring Coaches Clinic, held during a Friday night thru Saturday afternoon every spring. Coach Mac's clinic always outdrew the Iowa clinic, even though many years they were on the same weekend.
The football camps are held in June; I can't speak to the attendance last year. Mac had very well-attended camps, ending with his huge one-day 7-on-7 camp every Father's Day.
I do know that a couple of local kids here in my neighborhood that have attended both Mac's camp then Chizik's last year described CHizik's as a "little more intense."

Qualify this please. I had no idea that Illinois and MSU were leagues better than ISU. I'm not an engineer so help me understand this.

As far as academics determining where top D-I recruits go I'd guess it's quite rare. If they're really bright kids they could go to a serviceable college, kick a$$, and get into a great grad program most anywhere ( not doing your undergrad at MIT so that you can play varsity football in a BCS conference is a pretty good excuse) and if they're really good they go pro.

Re: Barrent commits to Iowa

Bader, I don't know where you get the idea that "if he was seriously considering Illinois or MSU, neither ISU's or UI's engineering programs can hold a tee to either of them." Yes Illinois has a very respected engineering program (in some areas) and is rated higher than ISUs, but "can't hold a tee to it?" And MSU's program is good but no better the ISUs. When it comes to recruiting undergraduate engineering students ISU has a much larger engineering career fair (one of the largest in the country) than either Illinois or MSU and I think that is a pretty good indication of how well ISU's engineeering program is respected among those who hire engineers. If you are using US News and World Report to make your comparison, I wouldn't put a lot of credence in their rankings (based too much on reputation).

I'm not sure how much better they are than ISU but they cost more to go there.
