    Re: Bret Meyer cut...

I still can't get over the fact that he got cut so they could get a guy who was a 3rd string college QB.

    Re: Bret Meyer cut...

4th round in the '01 draft, yeah, I know.

A certain great college coach but flop of an NFL coach was calling the shots in Washington at the time too. I still think he couldn't handle the fact that an ISU QB was the best one on the roster...even better than his boy Wuerffel.

I mean, how bad would that have looked, Steve trades for his former star QB, only to lose the job to a Cyclone.

Man, that sucks. I'll be the first to say it. The Redskins made a BIG mistake. I think this is the motivation that Bret needs to really put in some hard work and become the great QB that we ALL know he can be. I think the CFL would be perfect for him. A bit bigger field, less crowds to scare him, and I've heard that he LOVES the Canadian people. Go get it Bret!

    Re: Bret Meyer cut...

The camp reports were not very good for Bret. His passes weren't tight and tended to float. No doubt he has savvy, but at the pro level, there is little margin for error. His long arm is not that strong. As we saw last season, most of the long catches were one's where the receiver had to come back to the ball, not in stride. Simply too much competition at that level. And the CFL is a fast moving league. If he moved like he did his first two years, he might have a chance. But the way he moved last year, no chance. Just telling it like it is.

I am blown away by how many people think this is a big suprise, and that the Redskins will "regret" this. I enjoyed watching Bret play at ISU and thank him for his time, but I am also realistic as to his abilities and possibilities in the NFL. It's one thing to be a knowledgable fan and being totally blinded by your school spirit.

If there is some sort of betting line on whether the 'Skins just made a big mistake (or any kind of mistake for that matter) or if they made the right choice...I'd have to go on the "right choice" side of things.

Meyer is what he is. A decent college QB that had some very nice moments, some rather poor ones and his stats benefited from playing all 4 years. An NFL QB, he is not.

When you have to share time with a freshman QB your Sr year in meaningful games, you probably aren't NFL material.

Congrats to him for working his way into at least a tryout.

Yep, not bad for a kid that was never expected by doctors to be able to walk without leg braces.

    Re: Bret Meyer cut...

The Redskins have been bungling their QB choices for a long time (as mentioned in another thread). Sage was just as good as any of the other guys on the roster when he was with the Skins. Look how he did in Houston this year. Nobody wants to give him a shot because he isn't a 'name', but I bet the fans in Houston like him. I don't think Meyer is great, but the Redskins still aren't strong at QB and Meyer could probably do just as well as the other guys on the roster.

Or is it politicing,,,,if that is even a word??
It's informal, but if you spell it "politicking" you could slide it through...

    Re: Bret Meyer cut...

any chance he gets into coaching?

Our star QB from a few years ago, Bill Whittemore coached at a high school, then was a grad assistant at Kansas for a few years, now I think he's a high school or small college AD somewhere back in his home state ...

Exactly. Thanks for all you did/do for ISU Bret, but this really isn't a suprise.

Yeah, not a big suprise for me either. I really feel that if Mac would have had a quality QB coach, Meyer would have been a much better QB. Chizik even commented at one point (if I remember correctly) that Meyer wasn't where he should be for a 4 yr starter.
