Serious question. Does he? I gotta be honest, at first I just thought he was a typical hawk homer, but I decided pass judgment for a while. Give him an unbiased shot. I watched many of his shows on ch 22 connections. Just when I was starting to respect him a bit more, he goes and specifically calls people out on this board and rags on the Clones. What's the deal?!?!
Now, I can understand a little humor. WHO TV's sound off with Andy Fales and Keith Murphy did something similar, with their "I think" segment bashing the in-state teams. But the difference is, they did it with every team, and just for the sake of humor.
I suppose it wouldn't be to much to ask to have him answer this himself, since he is on this board all the time. Jon?

It's because Deace used to do it successfully.
Difference was, Deace was funny and had the raw talent to pull it off. Even Hawks thought it was funny.
I doubt Miller has the talent to make it work. I imagine it just comes off as sophomoric and sad.

I like listening to Jon on the radio, but I agree with Phaedrus in a sense. He has the talent to appeal a majority of his target audience (Hawkeye fans) but (no offense Jon) lacks the ability to transition that talent to other audiences such as ISU, UNI, or Drake fans. Deace did it well mostly because he could mask his true "fanship" (Michigan) enough to sway the masses; at least for a while. I haven't really seen that from Jon, which is probably from his affiliation and "fanship" of Iowa.
EDIT: This is in regard to treating/pleasing all fanbases equally and has nothing to do with hosting the show as a whole.

Short answer: Yes and yes.
As for Deace. Typical Michigan fan. Can't get into that school, well pretend you did and cheer your heart out for them anyhow, even though you were not good enough to be one of them. Yeah, that makes sense. I would say over 80% of MSU fans that I have met refer to Michigan as "their" school.

Does this mean that I can't cheer for them? If so, how about if roles were reversed; could I cheer for ISU at that point?

I saw my first game in 1961 and have been a season ticket holder and NCC member for many years. I don't know if I was "good enough" to be a student at Iowa State, as I never tried to get in. I DO KNOW however, that I am as true and die-hard a fan as there is. I proudly refer to ISU as "my" team, and will forever! I realize that the majority of the Cyclone's fan base is students and alumni, (hope I spelled that right, I'm no college graduate), but to berate and stereotype people you've never met because they didn't choose to, or have the opportunity to, attend the institution of higher education that they support is ridiculous. Jon seems like a good guy. But when it comes to radio and ratings, being a good guy doesn't always cut it. You have to get your listeners' blood boiling every once in a while. That's what fires up conversation about a particular show and gives it a boost.
Either that or Hawkeye fans were getting a little uncomfortable with him being too nice to the Clones, so he had to prove his loyalty.

It is entertainment. Jon has a show to do and needs listeners to do that show. Unfortunately, in today's age of reality TV and talk shows, controversy is the name of the game. If you want callers and listeners, talk about something that ruffles feathers.
I don't know Jon, but when he has been a REPORTER, I thought he has been good. He has done some great interviews where he has even taken questions from this very board. But when he is being a RADIO PERSONALITY, I've got no time for him. I don't listen to it. And that would be my advice for people who dislike his show. Just don't listen to it.

Well, for one thing there have been about 5 threads about him in the past week. |
Oh... people will come Mr. Pollard. People will most definitely come.
No, I don't live in Seattle anymore, I'm back in Des Moines but I don't feel like changing my username.

Ok, do we seriously hafta have a thread about Jon Miller every other day? Everyone knows he is a hawkeye toolie, and he has very little sports knowledge outside of Iowa. Let's just be thankful that deace is our guy and actually has something to say.

I've never listened to him, but what I find sad is everyone who complains about him but continues to listen, and then complains some more. Are everyone's radios broken and stuck on his channel? Have they stopped putting things like CD players in cars, or have never heard of satellite radio? You all would probably be happier hitting that little button that says "AM" and listening to the static.
