I expect 5-7 wins this year. Anything more is gravy and I think fans realize that. But if Chiz does not get to a bowl game in the 2008 or 2009 seasons something is going to have to change. Pollard's grandiose fundraising and building plans -- for the whole department, not just football -- are very dependent on football success.

If we win 5 games this year, 7 next, that is the schedule we should be on. No patience required.
Will people have patience if we win 2-3 games the next two years? I sure don't think so. Patience is sticking with the coach after they have failed to meet expectations. (see Gary Pinkel and Mark "the man eater" Mangino.)
I don't feel you can be patient with a coach until some are calling for his head.
That being said, I think I will be patient with Chizik, but the patient will be an overwhelming minority on this board. True, how much success did Mangino have at Kansas before this season? So it may not be a steady climb up with clear improvements.

I was a Dan Mac backer, up until I heard we hired Chizik...
So I know how to be patient. And I will back Chizik also.
What defines success to me as a fan is meeting NON-expectations. Meaning, accomplishing things that are unexpected. Last season I was pleasantly surprised for this reason. The surprises were two fold: the oline was expected to me mediocre at best, but turned out to be decent, if not a strength of the team. Second, I was surprised to see the effort turn to wins late in the season with Colorado and K State.
In my mind the two candidates for surprises would be a Big XII road win, second would be a winning record/bowl game. Accomplish either of these and I will be elated.
Go Cyclones!!

Football drives the machine. In fact, football wins equate to higher student enrollment. That's one reason University Presidents are so involved.

That being said, I think I will be patient with Chizik, but the patient will be an overwhelming minority on this board. Gary Pinkel and Mark Mangino did not win 2-3 games a year for multiple years before they took off.
Gary Pinkel:
2001 4-7
2002 5-7
2003 8-5
2004 5-6
2005 7-5
2006 8-5
2007 12-2
Mark Mangino:
2002 2-10
2003 6-7
2004 4-7
2005 7-5
2006 6-6
2007 12-1
If Chizik only wins 2-3 games in 2009, I will see few reasons why he shouldn't be fired. Have you seen the schedule? It's a joke. Football - Schedule - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - Iowa State Cyclones Sports

There's no way Alden was going to fire both coaches in the same year though.
I don't agree with you that ISU's 2009 schedule is a joke. We play Iowa and go to Kent State. Two teams we've lost to recently. A joke schedule is KU's schedule in 2007 (C. Michigan, SE Louisiana, Toledo and Florida Int'l).

I'm not going after the guy's head if things aren't great. I do hope to see moments of great coaching and game management. I also hope that I don't see the same predictable ISU game plan I have for the last 5 or so years. I want to see more evidence of why Chizik is a sought-after coach. I do think there are opportunities in our schedule to win more than five games, and yes, I'll be disappointed with each loss. If you're not disappointed with a loss, you should set your sights lower to a different league - like t-ball, or pee-wee football. There, everyone's just pleased as heck that you played.

Danny Mac took us to a plateau people didn't think we would ever get to, he just couldn't get us up over the hump.
Do you think anyone would have expected 5-7 wins in Dan's second year? I doubt it
I just want to see progress, more games like the OU and CU games last year where we never give up, and are in it all game

I have heard that there is a lot of money already lined up for bowling in the South endzone, two levels. In reality, had Mac stayed on, the finances were drying up. We won four games that year and how many were in overtime and last second wins? We should have won 5 games this last year at least. Sandvig and Meyer turnovers in the first two games against Kent State and UNI killed us. I was there. Nothing like the defense holding them and then have your punt returner fumble the ball a few times down toward the Red Zone. Nothing like moving the ball and then have your QB create turnovers and/or miss open receivers that would have resulted in TD's. Even the big pass play to Bates against Iowa wasn't a great pass. Bates had his man beaten so bad and then made a great play on the ball.
I sensed a lot of enthusiasm for the program at the last event I was at. People are cautiously optimistic. I didn't get that same sense of enthusiasm during Coach Mac's last year. In fact, I got the sense that people were thinking that our talent level and quality of coaching staff would continue to decline.
