ISU signage on Jack Trice to change for renovations

As part of Iowa State University's renovation of Jack Trice Stadium, signage will be changed to show the new I-State logo, and parts of it will also further honor Jack Trice.

The lettering on the east upper deck facade, which currently reads Iowa State University, will be taken down and replaced with a newly designed font that will say Jack Trice Stadium, and the existing Cyclone logos will be replaced with the new I-State icons, according to Steve Malchow, senior associate director of athletics.

"Jack Trice, who died tragically due to injuries sustained in a game in 1923, is a legendary figure in our history," Malchow said. "By doing this we hope to continue to enhance his legacy."

ISU President Gregory Geoffrey said the project is being financed by the athletics budget, using funds that the department generates, not by tuition funds or state appropriations.

"It is part of a larger plan to give appropriate recognition to Jack Trice," Geoffrey said.

The ISU Purchasing Department is still taking bids for the signs, but according to project manager Thomas Oftedal, an architect with ISU's Department of Facilities Planning and Management, the exterior sign package will cost in the range of $150,000.

"This will also include a new sign to go on the back of the south-facing scoreboard, the Hilton (Coliseum) marquee change and placards for the east and west entrances to the Jacobson Athletic Building," Oftedal said.

There is a separate bid being taken for the wayfinding signage that is expected to cost in the range of $135,000.

"There are different bids because the university considers them to be different projects," Oftedal said.

He said that's because the wayfinding signs were a part of the original $19.5 million budget approved by the Iowa Board of Regents for "The Jack Trice Improvements Project."

The contracts will call for the new signs to be installed from Aug. 4 to 22. ISU's home football season-opener will be Aug. 28 against South Dakota State.

Since the year 1620, Black men and women have had a horrendously difficult existence in this country. Jack Trice, from what we know about him, was a noble human being.

I understand that ours is the only BCS stadium that carries the name of a Black American. Today, reading about the new signage planned for JTS, I could not be prouder of Iowa State University.

I wish the still would have named the press box after Pete Taylor. The banner in Hilton just doesn't do enough to honor him IMO.

I kind of have mixed emotions about this. On one hand, I think anything we do to spruce up the stadium is great and it's also great to honor Jack Trice. However, I also loved the giant "IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY" on the upper east deck - it's a great visual to people are who are driving into campus. But I bet I'll like the end result.

The brick things on Elwood Drive (University Boulevard) reduce the need for that in my opinion.

I agree. I like this, but I also really liked the current sign on the east side.

However, as long as we're winning, it could be in pink for all I care.

I had heard personally from Pollard about a month back that this was a step towards the way that college athletics is moving with the naming of the field. They want to keep the stadium as Jack Trice to obviously honor him. Jamie is obviously looking for that big time donor to complete the stadium and this signing was a way to keep Jack Trice very prominent.

Given all of the corner-cutting done on the press tower when it was built, I doubt Pete would have wanted his name on it.

Wait till the fall after that! If anyone hasn't seen the work that they are doing on the west side of the stadium, it is going to be nice. I walked by the west entrance yesterday and the columns that go between the stairs going up the hillside look sweet. I can't wait for the entire stadium to get that treatment.

BTW, I wonder if ISU could use that signage on the east upper decks somewhere else. You'd think that there would be a place for that.

Do or do not, there is no try .....Yoda

Maybe they'd auction off the two lighted "obsolete" Cy logos. Who wouldn't want a ridiculously huge metal Cy on their front lawn?

I like the thought of changing the name, but would be inclined to keep the cyclones logo up there. I think they would be easier to distinguish from the new logos which I feel would look too clustered up there.

Personal taste I suppose.
