Is Kinnick Stadium at Risk?

Any chance it becomes damaged by flooding and the fall classic gets moved to Ames?

Kinnick is the one place I haven't heard of the flooding being a huge issue, and I haven't heard anything about the hospital being in danger and it's within spitting distance, so I doubt it.

Re: Is Kinnick Stadium at Risk?

What exactly could happen to it if it did flood? A basketball arena would be damaged but a football stadium is pretty much outdoors and waterproof. Sod can be replaced and the bleachers and fan areas are built so they can be hosed off after being inundated with hordes of drunken fans after every game anyway, so it's not like water will ruin much.

Iowa Hawkeye All-Stars, 2007-2008: Ryan Bain, Ricky Stanzi, Dana Brown, Tyler Gerstandt, Arvell Nelson, Bradley Fletcher, Dana Brown (x2), Ben Evans, Arvell Nelson (x2), Dominique Douglas, Anthony Bowman, Clint Huntrods, Lance Tillison, Dana Brown (x3), Dominique Douglas (x2), Brandon Myers, Ryan Donahue, Arvell Nelson (x3), James Cleveland, Cody Hundertmark, Cedric Everson, Abe Satterfield, Riley Reiff, Dexman Moses, James Ferentz, Harold Dalton, who will be next???

[obligatory Hawk joke]

It's only a risk if you go down with your wallet onto the Hawkeye sideline.

Kinnick is located in University Heights. HEIGHTS.

The cold, arctic winds have descended upon Ames, Iowa. With winter's arrival, one season ends...
.... so that another can begin.

From within the concrete walls of Hilton Coliseum, a ceremony takes place where
a synergy between its players, fans, and coaches inspires greatness... success...

... Magic.

No. It will be fine. No need to worry.

ISU Student - Iowa fan. Best of both worlds.

What if they named it in irony? Like littleface in Dick Tracey.

After what has happened in Cedar Rapids the last couple days, I don't think it would surprise me.

When asked about the ISU @ Iowa game: Iowa wide receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos said. "This has to be the most important game of the year. We've got to treat it like we're playing for a Big Ten championship."

Looks like the turf at eiu stadium is about 55 feet (85 feet minus 30 feet since field is excavated this much below surrounding terrain, iirc) above the Iowa River at normal levels.

. . . Topography

The University of Iowa East Campus has over eighty feet of topographic change from a high point of elevation 720+ near the President's Residence to a low of less than 640 along the Iowa River. The Pentacrest is at elevation 698, about twenty feet below the President's Residence, and drops almost fifty feet to 650 near the Memorial Union.

High points on the West Campus include the 20 acre wooded hilltop west of Carver-Hawkeye at elevation 730+ (eighty feet above the Hawkins Drive intersection with Highway 6) and Finkbine Golf Course at elevation 780 along the south boundary (with 80 feet of elevation change down to 680 in the northwest corner of the course). Elevation 725 is near the Dental Science Building and east of Kinnick Stadium. Westlawn, the Nursing Building, and Boyd Law Center are at elevation 720 and Riverside drive is sixty to seventy feet below those buildings.

The Far West Campus ranges from a high point above elevation 770 west of the Hawkeye Drive Apartments to a low elevation of approximately 650 along Clear Creek. Within the Oakdale Campus elevations range from 800'+ along Highway-965 and Oakdale Boulevard falling to less than 700 along the south edge of the campus.

Noah would have to be coming with the Arc for Kinnick to be in trouble. Unlike ISU's facilities which sit in a flood plain, Iowa's are up on a hill.

So... can we combine "Iowa" and "East-sider" jokes in this forum, now???

If Kinnick gets flooded, there won't be a University of Iowa left. Hell, there won't be an Iowa City left...

There probably wouldn't be an Iowa left, either, so most of us wouldn't have to worry about a game.

Let's see, you drive to the game along a river, then climb a steep hill to the ridge above to get to the stadium...

I say with pride, that in my 44 years on this earth, I have never looked upon Kinnick with my own eyes.

And I'm glad for it.

Hope the residents of Iowa City recover well from the flood, though. My sister and brother in law, who are both ISU grads, work for UofI and both of their kids, who live in Iowa City, are going to ISU...

I urinated on it in the spring of '06, and also witnessed "the comeback" in 2002 firsthand. Ah, what a glorious day
