It could happen. We need to be ready to play, we certainly can't afford to lose that game.

I agree 100%. I almost feel like we have a better shot in Iowa City than this game. It just scares me...

I'll order up another shot of sin, I'm running twice as hard into the wind, I'll hitch a ride when the next one comes in, fell off the wagon again...

Re: BleacherReport prediction for SDSvsISU

After losing to UNI at home last year.

coupled with the loss to Kent State last year and the close wins (absolutely lucky) against Toledo and UNLV the previous year. . . .

This should almost come as expected. I'm very nervous going into this one bc the past two years our poor early play set the tone for the season.

No one will give us the time of day until we can consistently schlack the non-conf. opponents. I would love to get off to a fast start like in 2002 with Seneca. But... finish strong like last year.

Hopefully stuff like this (and probably many more poor predictions to come) will set a fire under the team and get the wheels rolling week 1 and not week 7.

One immense difference with the last two seasons is that we now have an offensive line.

I'd further hesitate to compare this fall's team with when things were falling apart for Mac (remember, he had lost both Berryman and Kurtis Taylor, among others), or the '07 squad that was adjusting to a new coach and system early in the season.

However, I guess we'll see as we shall see. At least it should be a nice day for football.

Re: BleacherReport prediction for SDSvsISU

I'm not going to lie... SD State has a few Iowa small school guys who I played against in high school and paid attention to after I was out of hs...

I don't want to take anything away from these guys, cause they were good athletes and did very well at their level, but if ISU doesn't beat a team made up of this talent level by at least 3 touchdowns I think we are in alot of trouble as far as the shape of our program.

People who don't know how good SDSU is will look past this game.

They beat a team (NDSU) who had previously won at Minnesota.

Honestly.... ANY kind of win will be good for our guys.

Look at our games with the last IAA teams we have played since Seneca Wallace left. We snuck past Illinois St in a pretty close game. We won on a missed FG by UNI. We got HAMMERED by UNI.

Re: BleacherReport prediction for SDSvsISU

I don't understand how people can be so worried about this game while most on this site are predicting 5, 6, or 7 win seasons in other threads. If we are going to win that many games, then this one shouldn't be close. If this game is a battle, or god forbid a loss, 6 or 7 wins and a bowl game is certainly not going to happen.

I know a lot of us were nervous about the UNI game last year, and we all know how that season turned out.

Re: BleacherReport prediction for SDSvsISU

I think it's a pretty well written article and he lays out the reason why pretty good. We have lost Bowen etc. Blythe and Meyer are no longer in the fold. On paper that is not good for the good guys.

However he's totally off if he thinks Gene Chizik can't do well offensively because he's a defensive coach. That's why he hired Robert McFarland....

This game is going to be a good test to see how our program is progressing Be carefull looking down on those schools from the Dakotas. Minnesota found that out the hard way last year...

You can't go by chain logic.. I remember awhile ago someone made a chain that had Wartburg beating a team that beat a team all the way up to the national champions LSU...

UNI would hammer SD State. If we lost this game it would be a bigger upset than Ap St. over Michigan last year.

I'm going into the game confident, but I went into the Kent State game thinking there was no way we would lose. After that, I had a feeling we'd lose to UNI.

But, look at the 2005 season. We should have walked all over NIU and instead it was close for most the game. The week after the NIU game we crushed Iowa and a week after that we struggled against Army. Not to mention the Baylor game that year or, of course, the Michigan team last year.

Just because we are better, doesn't mean we will win; nor does a loss mean that we will have a losing season. How can we get torn apart by Texas and the next week take #4 Oklahoma to the last minutes? Allot has to do with match ups, timing, atmosphere, etc. and the first game is always tense. We don’t know how the new players will react, or how the rest of the team will react to the new players.

The point is, SDSU could be a better team then some may think and we don’t know how long it will take to for our team to get rolling.

In 2005 we played Illinois State in the opener, not Northern Illinois.

We played NIU in 2004 (won 48-41) and in 2003 (lost 24-16).

I really thought we'd whup on Illinois State, but our secondary got burned a few times on some long touchdown passes. I think our guys were looking ahead to our second game that year (at home against #8 Iowa).

Anyway, moral of the story is that we definitely struggle against "cupcakes."

Good grief why rip the author. He's got to create football stories in the summer when there's no football going on. I'll bet everyone will love the guy when part 3 of his series comes out and he lists Maine at Iowa as one of his top potential upsets.

Iowa Hawkeye All-Stars, 2007-2008: Ryan Bain, Ricky Stanzi, Dana Brown, Tyler Gerstandt, Arvell Nelson, Bradley Fletcher, Dana Brown (x2), Ben Evans, Arvell Nelson (x2), Dominique Douglas, Anthony Bowman, Clint Huntrods, Lance Tillison, Dana Brown (x3), Dominique Douglas (x2), Brandon Myers, Ryan Donahue, Arvell Nelson (x3), James Cleveland, Cody Hundertmark, Cedric Everson, Abe Satterfield, Riley Reiff welcome to the club, who will be next???
