I agree with a previous poster:
Best player to play for ISU: Troy Davis
Player that meant the most to the success of his team: Seneca Wallace
You don't rush for 2000+ yards twice for a 2-3 win team TWICE without being the best player hands-down. As far as Seneca Wallace, we don't start out 6-1 and find ourselves in the top 10 without the leadership of Wallace. The problem that year is Oklahoma and Texas figured out "Stop Wallace, Stop ISU," which the rest of the teams on the schedule emulated and the coaching staff never changed it up to show something new.

70's - Dexter Green
80's - Dwayne Crutchfield - I remember walking to class behind him and thinking, "Jeez, this guy's arms are bigger than my thighs!
90's - Troy Davis - Seems to be a concensus pick
00's - Seneca Wallace - Texas Tech game sealed the deal

Glad somebody mentioned Luther Blue. He's one of my favorites. I remember his return against the Skers like it happened yesterday. The 76 team was one of ISU's best(8-3 and #3 in the nation in total offense) and yet we didn't get a bowl bid.

If anything, this discussion has shown that there are many good deserving players. Although a larger question is how could this radio show possibly lead an intelligent conversation on this topic. I could understand them leading the great debate of Chuck Long vs. Brad Banks, but I doubt they watched every game David Archer, Seneca Wallace, and Bret Oberg played, for example.
Anyway, I hope those who listen to the show enjoy it, but given the source it would be like us discussing Ronnie Harmon and Reggie Roby.

On defense I would have to mention Ellis Hobbs. He made some incredible plays and some great interceptions. Remember the year we went to the Independence bowl. The defense almost scored as many touchdowns as the offense. Ellis also made a great interception to save the Independence bowl game. The NFL must think he's pretty good too.

Great stuff guys, I really appreciate the thoughts, and hope you at least ennjoyed the walks down memory lane.
I spoke with someone that has been an ISU expert for quite a while, and many of the names are similar....with a few others. Should be a fun segment today, 3:05

Although Troy Davis accomplished probably more than any other Cyclone, I'd say guys like (in the last 20 years) Wallace, Rosenfels, Haywood, Danielson and Blythe have had the greatest impact on winning...offensively. On the defense side the guys who helped us win the most were Hayward, Matt Word, Harklau, Bowen, Dustin Avey, Hobbs and James Reed. Of course there were others, but these players stood out in my mind. Basically, since the late 70's ISU has only had "winning" football from 2000-2005 thanks to McCarney. Jim Walden did have one year where he went 6-5 (1989). They didn't go to a bowl though. People thought Walden was going to be the guy, but it wasn't meant to be. That team had some studs though, like Blaise Bryant.

I think it's hard to say they had bigger impacts on winning. We won more games when they were here but that's part of why they're thought of as such great players. The teams around those players were much better altogether than the teams Troy Davis played with, yet he was still able to do what he did. If Davis had the playmakers around him that those other teams had, I'm sure you'd have seen even more success.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player. |

Could you imagine TD with Rosenfels or Wallace... The idea of that kind of running game combined with a good passer... WOW!
